I made a similar move 20 years ago, and subsequently got married (and divorced) and had children... Not being closer to family has really been hard. Where are you from originally? Having lived in Dallas, and in several cities in the eastern seaboard/ time zone, I find the cultural differences to be large. Also, I found that my friendships evolved largely from my kids activities and school, thru meeting other parents, growing into social adult activities/family outings. Happy to chat in detail if you'd like (DM).
Yes, will DM you. Thanks!
Edit: We’re currently in Philly, thinking of moving to Dallas
Close to NYC & DC, more expensive, nicer weather when compared to Dallas. We’ve heard weather is awful in summer in Dallas and that education is very competitive in schools. What would you do?
Also I would put some big value on friends and family with young kids
I am biased. I grew up near Philadelphia but lived most of my adult life in Dallas (About 25 years). We moved overseas 3 years ago. I would stay in Dallas. Ya, it's hotter than hades a few weeks every year, but otherwise it's quite nice. And being close to family is super important. A few other reasons: cost of living. Hands down, you can have a nice home, in a better neighborhood for a lot less in Dallas. Schools can be competitive, but there are tons of options. We had 3 kids in public schools in Flower Mound, and 2 went Ivy, 1 went TCU. If we move back, I'd probably go to Southlake or the M Streets. Travel is also so much easier from Dallas - you can get a direct flight to almost anywhere in the US with no more than 4 hours flying time. Those bicoastal commutes are awful.
Also look at Allen, that or Frisco for that area.
I recently moved from Florida to Virginia for the opposite reasons. Im closer to family and NEVER realized how important it was. I get the climate part of Dallas, consider the environment for the family. It sounds like you have opportunities either way
Thank you. We’re actually considering moving to Dallas to BE closer to my family (my husband has no family in the US) & our close friends. I made a mistake in my original post and the darn thing won’t let me edit it. We’re currently in Philly thinking of moving to Dallas. I have some uncles near us in philly right now but they are not around a lot- they’re off with their kids who are all in the Midwest. We also thought since the kids are so young and we both have the luxury to work from wherever, now was the time to try something different.
Philly is nice but right now it is going thru big city challenges like others. Many closed businesses, homelessness on a rise, crime as well. The cost of living is certainly not cheaper then Dallas. On good side if you never been in a walking city then Philly is a good option and diverse sets of choices for everything from housing, food and environment. ACH Houses will be expensive then Dallas.
Yes, I know- I currently live here. Lately I’ve been saddened to hear of shootings literally everyday. In any case, we’ve decided to make the move to Dallas.
