I found creating and tracking against a realistic budget really helpful, along with automatically transferring part of each pay cheque into another savings account so it doesn’t feel like that money’s “available” for me to spend. I also tried to limit impulse buying - if I see something I like at a store I often leave it and see if I’m still thinking about it a week later - if I am then I go back and get it, but often I find my initial feeling that I really want/need it has passed

1. Strict budget.
2. Make do with what you have - e.g. a good sharp knife and a paring knife will suffice for a surprisingly long time.
3. Cut frills. Ask yourself "do I need this". A lot.
4. Continue living like you're in a pandemic after the pandemic - cook at home. Add more beans and tofu, cut down on meat and fancy cheese. Coffee at home. Watch movies on Netflix instead of date night at the theaters. Don't go crazy on new clothes / toys. Take frugal vacations. Don't take cabs or ubers! (Harder in Chicago perhaps). Etc. Aggressively track what your money goes to.
