Looking for teachers using the HMH Into Literature Curriculum… Our district just decided to purchase this last week and we have open house before our training. I need a school supplies list! Do kids need composition notebooks? A binder? Folders? Etc to go with this curriculum? TIA

Depends on how you are going to implement it. My students have the option to use digital notes or a composition book for notes. Around 90% utilize the comp book. All formal writing assignments are done in writable (comes with HMH). We also have the consumables for grammar and vocabulary but not every district purchases those. If you don’t want to give the students the entire book for those (I don’t) then a folder is necessary. You could also use a binder for notes and the consumables. I have a few colleagues that use that method. Another colleague is completely digital even the grammar and vocabulary.

How do you all take care of things outside of work? The last thing I want to do after being hyper-organized at work is figuring out my budget or retirement plan or scrubbing the bathtub or figuring out what to buy at the grocery or planning a vacation. I feel so burnt out I can only just sleep on weekends and can’t bring myself to go out or even do basic self care. I feel bad putting this all on my husband and how would I even have the energy to raise kids??

Is Facebook (Meta) lowballing? I have 11 years of consulting and industry experience. I recently interviewed for a Program Mgr role. Midway through the interview process, they came back saying this role has changed and they can only hire an IC5 and are offering $230K. I am an M4 currently and last year I made about $210K. What’s your suggestion on how to counter this?

I received an offer from a school that splits writing and reading into different classes. I guess I’m having a hard time figuring out what that would look like. I would be teaching writing. Any ideas?

Which of Shakespeare’s comedies works best with grades 9-10? I really like “Twelfth Night” and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” I’m wondering if anyone has ever used “The Taming of the Shrew” or “The Merchant of Venice” and can give me students’ reactions to one or both. I’m really tired of R&J and they get tragedies in other grades. BTW-It bugs me that I can’t italicize book titles on this app. I’m I the only one?

Are any of the ELA teachers here also directing school plays, either by choice or by obligation?

I happily directed three plays a year for all 28 years of my career, but I know some teachers get "stuck" with doing the plays. I would love to be a resource, particularly for those in the second situation.
