Looking for tips to help generate my own client base when I work in a rural area for a firm where the only lawyers are myself and my boss. I’m a relatively new lawyer and with his name on the door it makes it hard to get new clients because everyone wants to deal with the name partner. Venting… I had a PC reach out last week for services (commercial real estate) who proceeded to tell me that their project is going to make me the “gold standard” , so rich and etc. further they wanted me to send them a plan of everything needed for all the phases of development and an estimated cost. The call completely drained me and rubbed me the wrong way. Then they brought up my age and me being younger, saying it’s an opportunity of a life time. It felt extremely condescending.

I’m an associate attorney at a mid-size family law practice. (5 attorneys, 3 support staff). I’ve been here for 3 years and just asked for a raise to $130k from $90k. My annual billable target is 1400. However, since I’ve been here I’ve barely broken 1000 despite working my ass off. I bill out at $375. They told me no more raises unless I start taking my own cases. Now they just hired a new associate and are paying him $170k and he takes his own cases. Am I being unreasonable asking for $130k?

Young solo here w/ a question about fees: 1. A local solo criminal defense attorney has offered to pay me to go and make appearances before the Court on some of her cases to make announcements. (For example, “ready when reached”). I’m open to doing this and this attorney is asking what my fee would be? Does anybody have a resource available for pricing and billing? I am 2 years out of law school, working as a corporate attorney, and wanting to go solo. Ideally, I will take my corporate client with me, but am working to build work on the side during the transition. Also, do you have any recommendations for document preparation? I would like to draft wills, trusts, and other estate planning documents, but would like a resource that has boilerplate provisions to utilize as a reference.

What would you say are the main perks of being at a small firm vs big law? I know the pay can be a lot less.
