Looking for your best study tips, recommended study schedules, any sort of words of encouragement as I plan to request my Becker study materials soon! I am a career changer and after completing my accounting degree almost entirely online due to COVID, I don’t have many people to discuss the exams with :(

There’s only “Becker Study Groups” on Facebook for each exam with are helpful and good place to find community. Also, another 71 has a forum Thats interesting to read!

I would recommend joining CPA subreddit group, I wish I knew about that when I started my CPA journey. If you are in IL you can start taking your CPA exam provisionally (look into that). Take it one at a time and treat it like school/job. If you’re serious about it and you put in the time you will pass them without a doubt. Why don’t you get your credits evaluated and don’t apply for the NTS until you’re half way through the fist exam study material. IL ILBOA and NTS gets turned over in a few days each so doesn’t take that long. Good luck and the test are not impossible unless you make them impossible. Like everything else if you study and put in the hard work you can knock it out!

FAR overlaps with Audit, so a lot of ppl recommend taking Audit after FAR. REG is the most different from all of them.

All the best!

My advice is start with the exam that you want to start with. A lot of people say to start with far because it takes the longest to study. I started with reg though because I was having the hardest time having the desire to study. I really enjoy tax and did my master degree with an emphasis in tax. So I wanted to use that to my advantage and not lose all that knowledge that I gained if I waiting to take it at the end.

Also, have you applied for your NTS? If not, start that soon. they are taking longer to receive because of covid. Mine took about 3 months. (This was a few months after covid started, I’m not sure how long they are taking now.)

Mostly likely when you get Becker, it will be the full version(assuming you are at one of the big four that pays for it), only physical request the material for the exam you are studying for. I requested a book, but didn’t end up studying for it until a couple months later and it is now out of date because the test got updated. Luckily all the online materials get updated, so I just used that book.

Thank you! This was really helpful. I am in IL, so not sure if this is the same process everywhere, but the first step is to submit the domestic evaluation application, correct? I am not eligible until I complete my degree in March, so I assume that I cannot submit that until then. ILBOE says it takes 8 weeks for approval. Next would be the NTS? That also says 8 week approval. While Im waiting during this time, can I be studying for my first exam?

Good to know that I can request each section separately with Becker — had no idea.

What's the most effective way for a small RIA to recruit FAs who have a few years experience, want to break away from large/corporate firms? I'm a $70M fee-only (commissions for insurance) independent RIA with a generous comp schedule that enables FAs to own their own book while they grow. As the owner, my focus is to help FAs succeed; as a firm, our focus is on client service and helping them succeed. I can afford a small salary, but not benefits. I'm especially interested in female FAs.
