Subaru all day without question. You could go top of the line and be under the cost of all the others, way more reliable, lower maintenance costs, etc. read Consumer Reports and they’ll make the decision very objectively for you
Is it still Subaru if the comparison includes Lexus RX Hybrid?
Recognizably BMW, Volvo and Audi are luxury vehicles and cost more than Subaru
Depends on what you are looking for.
Subaru, if you are planning to buy the car and keep it for a bit. Good resale value, and reliable
BMW X3, if you enjoy a better driving experience ( response, acceleration, handling) and plan to lease. They drop their value quickly, and leasing a BMW is the cheapest form of ownership.
Audi Q3 is a level smaller than X3, more in the class of X1.
Haven’t driven a XC40, so nothing much to contribute from my perspective.
Acura RDX - amazing tech, better than all the above, cheaper, more reliable, and amazing power (270hp I think)
Subaru Outback, best value for the $$$. No question about that.
Love my XC40! Bought it new earlier this year because the available CPO inventory was only $3k less than the new.
I know buying new is not the best financial decision, but planing on driving it for the next 8-15 years.
Happy to answer more questions if you have any! I also looked at the options you suggested and thought that the xc40 felt like it had a more upgraded interior and it just looks so sleek. I ended up paying $42k (after tax) for my t5 r-design with all of the extra features. I figured it was worth the extra for the camera especially if I plan to keep it for the next decade
Pro
I can see where Subaru is a smart choice, but I just wish it were sexier.
Comparison (I bought RDX)
These are all soooooo boring. Lease a Stelvio instead. Better quality, safety, and it’s actually cool.
Go with CPO. Usually these cars are not abused.
If you don’t need a larger SUV, add a Mini Countryman to your list. I love mine.
X3 all the way. I generally buy preowned certified cars, 3 years or so old. That way much of their value has already dropped.

How often do you circulate? As in if you buy a 3 year old car by when do you sell it and get the new one ?
Why not consider Subaru Forester too?

I don’t like the boxy look. Reminds me of Tata sumo it was car in India which was used by cops
I just went with Acura RDX. I was in the same $40-50 tier and saw a bunch of cars, definitely recommend RDX. Also check out Infiniti
Audi!!!
I have the Subaru crosstrek and LOVE it - if you don’t need something too big. We got a new Limited edition since the price difference with CPO really wasn’t that dramatic.
Volvo XC40
Subaru Outback Touring or Touring XT

Why not limited XT?
I love my Subaru Outback. Bought in 2014 and still rides like new. It also kicks butt in the winter.
