Looking to buy an Omega but the NYC boutique is maxing at out at 5% discount whereas ADs are pushing 15%, plus the added incentive of no sales tax. Pros and cons of each?

Pros of going to an ad that carry multiple brands: builds purchase history towards hard to get stuff. Pros of boutique: they have the item in hand. In most cases AD>Boutique

They discount?!?

I was at my local boutique last Sunday and they would take even $1 off MSRP

Buy from Alan Furman. You’ll get an Omega w box and papers at an unreal price. My parents bought me a Planet Ocean in 2011 for high school graduation. At the time, list was $4100: my dad paid $2800.

Which omega model? I would suggest going to an AD instead of the boutique.

eBay has a Memorial Day sale for an additional 10% off. I bought mine from Jomashop for $3800 after taxes.

Jomashop provides 4 year warranty on Omega.

What’s the benefit of the ad vs boutique. I would just go tot he boutique. That’s what I’ve done for my pieces.

I’m going to go on a bit of a tangent here. There are obv many different inputs that go into a watch’s price. And unless you are spending millions of dollars, there is always a trade off. Ex. when you buy white gold instead of stainless steel, for example, you’re often losing out on the hand-finished movement that you could have afforded in SS.

Any time you get a limited edition (at retail price from a boutique), you are giving up getting a better watch to get that cool color or whatever other minor thing makes it limited. So if you buy a normal watch from a boutique, to then be able to buy limited editions also from a boutique, you are most likely making a series of bad trade offs in your collection.

And events at your local watch store are worth even less than access to overpriced (“retail priced”) watches imo.

For high end brands, recommend scouting out well-reviewed ADs in Delaware. No sales tax.

Do they discount all models ?

I normally go to an AD but I stopped into a boutique recently, and found the person I spoke with was more knowledgeable about the watches. Not just an enthusiast but had insights on (rumored) future releases, limited editions, which straps and bracelets were compatible with which other models, etc. I think a boutique could get you a higher level of service. Of course, a great AD salesperson also knows many of these things, but I think ADs are more hit or miss in this front. Does this justify a higher price? Can't answer that one, but it was nice to stop in and chit chat about the different models.

Anyone else feel like they’re not right for the corporate world? It’s not my personality to let my manager know of everything I’m working on - I’m heads down and I get the job done and only bring him in if I need help. However, I’m now learning that this is hurting me because my more vocal colleagues are being recognized for tasks I already do. I just hate these corporate games. Why isn’t it enough to just do the work well?

If we are talking asset class that isn’t really like marketable securities but might be able to treat it similarly solely by virtue of, say, valuation on a quarterly basis (contd)

People were talking about the Seiko cocktail time in here, just got in the OG, SARB065. Wow that dial is really something, Seiko is great at that. It’s not quite Grand Seiko or anything, but the finishing on the markers and handset is very nice for a $500 watch. It’s a little thicker than I like for a dress watch, and I hate the way the strap looks, but I get why Seiko-philes love these.
