Help me understand this. From a salary of 120k, I’m getting a total tax deduction of 27%. That’s $32,400 going to the government. 32 thousand?!?!?! Do I ever get any of it back? Why so much? It technically reduces my income to $87k. Can someone please explain. I’m appalled.

Is there a tax advantage to use an after tax 401k over a typical brokerage account if you could (hypothetically) not roll it into a Roth IRA later? I believe the main tax advantage comes from the rollover (and consequently not having to pay taxes on earnings), but I want to make sure my understanding is correct.

Is it considered rude to ask about the salary range before taking calls with recruiters? I keep getting emails about c-level ea roles and they try to entice me by saving hybrid role with great benefits and compensation, but won’t post the salary range in their job descriptions. I guess my thinking is that I’d waste their time with calls if we aren’t aligned on compensation. Curious to hear everyone’s thoughts.

Maternity leave as a new employee? I've been interviewing with a new company I'd like to jump off the public ship to, but they're pretty small and benefits info are nowhere to be found. When is a good time to ask about my options? I have what I'm anticipating my final interview to be today. Currently pregnant! Where I am now has 12 weeks of paid leave but I'm pretty sure I'll burn out and crash if I wait til then.

I go on maternity leave soon, and my firm offers 16 weeks paid leave, which I plan to fully take advantage of. The only female shareholder in our office keeps pushing me to only take 6 weeks though, because that's what she did. I feel really put off by her comments, but its also making me feel guilty about taking the full time.
