They’re lying to you. Industry jobs are common especially if you’re in big city. Don’t settle.
Liars. 🙄🙄🙄 they just want to place you somewhere and get paid.
Sounds like you want out, not to be moved around to align with the recruiters agenda.
Agreed, placing you immediately will get them commision.
Less marketable?!? Ridiculous!!! There may be less jobs available at higher levels (because companies don’t usually need equal levels of staff and tax directors for example) but there are enough. Each year you stay in public makes you way more valuable and advances the pace of your development and value faster than moving to industry would. Recruiters live off of commissions and they’re hurting in this current environment, so I’d never assume they’re looking out for your best interests.

Depends on your location and the market but industry jobs are very common in tax. Also, you can get jobs in industry at any level. I left as a SM. It just depends on what you want to do and where you want to go.
What region are you in? Industry is hiring like crazy at the manager and below levels due to retirements, the reporting obligations of the TCJA (bring the work in house to cut on outside fees), and the possibility of additional tax changes (depending on who wins Georgia).
Don’t settle. If you want out, reach out to other recruiters or apply for jobs via LinkedIn. If there are companies hiring that are in your area, reach out to an internal recruiter.
I applied to roughly 10 places. 2 public and 8 industry in the la area and got at least 1 interview per company. Many of them I made it to the final round but decided mutually not the best fit or money wasn’t what I was looking for. I don’t have cpa.
Keep looking OP. Feel free to DM me if you need any tips for interviewing!
I got the interviews without an external recruiter. Just sent my resume out through LinkedIn or through the company’s website.
The recruiter may or may not be right. Just like everything in tax, it depends. What location are you trying to work and what is your work stream? Let's say for example you help with state and local income tax but only work on Corps and looking for a position in LA. You may have a hard time because most of the companies in LA are partnerships. However, it doesn't mean you will not be able to find an industry position as a manager. Regional firms may or may not be less better hours because the resources are terrible in most cases and you will still be expected to perform. However, hours and pay could be better. As far as being less marketable, Senior to manager is the best time to move because you have more options. However, if you are a senior manager, you could land yourself that sweet director spot that would probably not be available had you had left as a senior. But the caveat is that there are less director spots out there. Your recruiter is wrong to speak in such absolutes. Everything is relative, and everything is negotiable in the work world. Go do the research yourself. Just use Glassdoor or indeed. You’ll find stuff
Yeah I’m looking at roles right now. If you are looking in the Southeast, I know some roles. DM me
Find a different recruiter, your getting told what they want you to hear in order to get them a quick commission and aren’t being told what’s in your best interest. I’ve worked with lots of recruiters, some are great and some are giant liars.
They just want those commissions that PA firms offer for placement
