I think 25-30% is pretty reasonable in DC and Arlington

like

I lived in Arlington and the annual hikes in rent were wild, just another factor to consider

like

Idk if you’d find a place for several years (they tend to significantly increase rent)- but one year at that ratio is totally fine

WC Smith caps annual rent increases at five percent, so maybe look at their buildings. They’re a good management company overall, too.

Do what makes you happy. I moved to the corner of 14th and U because I had a goal to live in the city. I was probably paying about 40% but it was worth it for a year and then I moved out. I loved it because it was a goal of mine but found it wasn’t worth it for me anymore since I was at a different point in my life.

~30% is the norm even w/ a roommate for nice 2bd2br I would however lock in a lease for longer than a year - two if you know you love the place. Rent jumps in this city are brutal

Buy a condo at that amount

Condos are constantly cropping up all around the city, esp. in AdMo. I’d just buy one. The mortgage would be less than your rent, and you’ll have something to show for it when all’s said and done.

Hey PMs! First time posting, so here goes… I’ve been at my current job, a DC-based start up, for 2 years and have 5 yoe (all in product). Seems like salaries have spiked quite a bit lately - any suggestions on what I should be asking for next promotion cycle? I currently make $130k

EY GDS appraisal system is the worst in the world Let's take mine as example Last year I got progression with exceptional contribution rating This year my performance was as even better than last year with several partner level appreciation and value adds done. But this time I got valued contribution ( no promotion or progression) Reason - last year I got progression and exceptional. Hence they can't give anything this year. I was like wtf dude. Are you serious?

Ahh looking forward to another early 9am rise just to sign into availability and collect my lofty 61k experienced associate PwC base salary. Get a fresh cup of coffee in my New York dumpster apt. Everyone said death, taxes, and PwC’s base salary raise after year one was guaranteed. Yet here we are no raise and partners smiling saying at least you have your job. 😎.

I have been at a large, well-known agency for a while but thinking about making the jump to a small/mid-size firm for a big raise and promotion. Should I be worried about “prestige?” Will it be impossible to go back to large agencies in the future? Would love to know everyone’s thoughts.

Sometimes I feel like I'm the only person in advertising who isn't fiercely competitive. I just wanna make a decent living, work hard but not too hard, spend time with my husband and my kid, do some good work... Meanwhile everyone I know through work is constantly gunning for a promotion or moving on. It works for them, but it's not my game. Anyone else ever feel this way? I wanna find my people.

Hi Ladies, would love your advice here. My boss recently approached me a week ago about moving into a new role, larger in scope w/ global visibility, managing more people and in other countries, manage a manager, AND fill the gap in other problem areas. He's told me that I am the only person that he trusts to do the job and they have created this new role for me to help us get IPO ready. The only catch: no pay increase, no title change. What do I do?

I’m pretty down today and wanted a few opinions. I just turned 37 and have been a director for almost 3 years. I had a check in today with my boss and she basically said I wasn’t up for a promotion this cycle. That crushed me because I have been working my butt off to get promoted. This isn’t where I saw myself at all at this age. Not that I’m old but I’m way older than most of the VPs at my agency and feel so behind in my career. Trying to get out of the negative head space but can’t shake it.

My new job has a 100% raise to my current salary with equity and bonus. Feel so good to leave a company that takes you for granted and made you do 2 people’s work that not a single soul in the team is capable of or wants to do. To anyone who feel like under-appreciated at work, being taken for granted, did all the dirty job but the reward is more jobs you don’t like. Start looking for new jobs. NOW. If they don’t care about your career or refuse a raise, you just need to find someone who does.

Can someone please help me on how I can negotiate a higher salary, when a large component of my total compensation is linked to variable pay. I have cleared the final rounds of interview with a company, where the variable component is almost negligible and they're only willing to give a raise over my fixed compensation. PS The variable pay last year at my current firm was impacted due to onset of covid. :(
