Ask the agency if they discount the billable rates of their directors in Austin relative to the rates they charge for people in NYC or LA.
When they say no, say "that's great. I also don't discount based on the city I'm in. Here is my salary requirement, regardless of office location."
Sounds like that recruiter makes money by placing people at low-ball rates.
Get a better recruiter. I know plenty of agencies (including mine) that pay better than that in Austin.
I just moved to Dallas for roughly a 20% increase but because of the cost of living and no state income tax, it's almost a 30% increase in pay
Doesn’t seem high, but remember there’s no income tax so depending on what they’re willing to offer you may still come out ahead.
Naw - I left Austin for precisely this reason. That is truly unrealistically high for the market. Mostly cause a lot of people want to leave nyc/la and retire there for a ton of money and no hours and frankly no agency there is doing that well yet. We’ll see if preacher and/or Callen pulls it off in the coming years. But, meanwhile, you’re taking a huge hit that is (in my opinion for cost of living and lifestyle) very much not worth it
@ Senior Director this was an outside Recruiter not in house. They said they didn’t think any agency in Austin would be able to meet that except maybe GSD&M (per above)
@SD this is exactly what I needed to hear. Thank you!
Theres no state tax. You do pay federal income taxes in Texas
There is not state income tax. Cost of living is MUCH lower than a major market and it’s constantly rated one of the fastest growing markets in the country. Don’t expect NY, LA, DC or CHI salary but look at the full package. I’m in Dallas, from Austin originally and have lived in La and DC and can tell you the number on your contract is not the same compared to everywhere else.
It seems on par with what I would expect directors to make at my agency. But possibly high at a smaller agency?
@ SAE I am moving to Austin from somewhere else. I obviously understand this. Which is why I am asking.
