Looking to move to DC in the fall for work. Expecting to bad to commute to Tyson’s/McLean a lot; is the commute from DC terrible? Which neighborhoods are good and have lots of transit options?

You’ll be commuting the opposite way of the real traffic. Most people live in VA suburbs like Tyson’s/McLean/Vienna/Reston and commute into DC instead of the other way around. Foggy bottom is the closest metro stop to Virginia and pretty good housing options around there. Arlington could be a consideration as well since it’s closer to Tyson’s and has a lot of neighborhoods along the same metro route

I live in Shaw, it's a great neighborhood but not great for metro to Tysons. I would look for things on the silver line, switching trains potentially doubles your wait time and adds more unpredictablity to your commute. West End is great but pricey.

Just live in Arlington. Minutes from DC, and you can hop on the metro and be in Tysons in 20 minutes

EY3 that all depends on where in DC you live and what time of day you're commuting. It took me an hour to get to Tyson's this morning from Brookland and I left at 7. It takes me an hour to get home when I leave at 4. Not sure why you're laughing, but I guess you didn't know any better.

Ya second EY1, solid hour if not more. Why are you even pointing out “non rush hour” he’s asking about a work commute and he’s going to be traveling during a rush hour time. You have never traveled from DC to Tysons for work if you think it takes 20 mins. Depending on where you live in DC it can take an hour on he metro to get to Tysons as well.

Foggy is great for that. I did the same thing for a while and it was super easy on the silver line. Never had to deal with traffic or any other issues. You’re also close to the metro, Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, and walking distance from DuPont and Georgetown

Its about an hour each way, driving from DC. Metro will add some time to that, depending on where you are. Choosing where you live depends very much on your budget, but good ones for commuting are Bloomingdale, Capitol Hill, Hill East, Brookland, Shaw.

funny

The metro Silver line goes to Tyson's from DC. Not a terrible ride and short walk to a lot office bldgs from the Tyson's stop... fingers crossed you're in one of those!

I have a car but rarely drive (I can bike or take the train to work in my current city). My SO and I are looking at Shaw, he’s lived there before and we really like the area.

I live in Dupont and drive to Sterling every day. I make it there in 40-50 minutes depending on what time I leave. I pass Tyson’s 20 minutes before my drive ends. To the people saying it takes an hour... no way. The only time it takes an hour is if you leave right at 5:30pm when traffic is peaking.

like

If I leave the 14th St area by 8 am it takes about 35 min to get to Tyson's. If I leave Tyson's between 430 and 630 it takes a little over an hour to get home. Metro (including walking to/ from) is a little under an hour each way on the silver line

Arlington is great. Crystal city, pentagon city, rosslyn... all on the metro line and cheaper than dc

For perspective, I live out past ballston and used to have a 15 minute metro commute / 10 minute drive to tysons. No traffic either morning or evening. Now I work smack dab downtown and it’s a 30 minute door to door commute on the metro.

like

^ my point was, live in Virginia: it’s not all that bad. You can get into dc and spend all the time you like there very easily.

Definitely try to get a place in DC proper, but know that’s it’s really pricey. I commuted from DC (NoMa area) to tysons and it’s not awful (as D1 said) but there still is some traffic. DC metro area traffic is either the worst or the second worst in the country

Will you have a car? Depending on your client the walk could be up to a mile from the metro. I live in Arlington for the ease of getting onto every major highway. When I had a tysons client it was ~30 min in the morning, ~40 in the evening. My coworkers lived in Adams Morgan/ Logan circle/ Dupont and had 45-60 min commutes

When I lived in SW DC near the Warf it only took 25-30 minutes to get to Tysons in the morning. There really wasn't any traffic since you're so close to 395 and the GW Parkway. Getting home however is a different story. Usually an hour.

Shoot for DC proper. Pretty much any major neighborhood will have a metro stop. Shaw wouldn’t be too bad. I live in Silver spring and it worked for my last project since it was in NoMa but now I’m gonna be commuting to Tyson’s 😵🔫

Lmao its not an hour each way. 20-30min in no trafficcl. Add 15-20min for rush hour
