Either wait to buy or buy and sub lease your current place if they allow it.
I double carried on apartments when my initial buyer fell through. It was too late to delay the close of my new place. Good idea include a contingency in your budget just in case.
In terms of too early it depends where you live and what you're looking for. If you need financing it will take longer to close regardless and it's not 100% predictable.
Unfortunately you really can't time the closing of your house very well. When I bought, I was looking for a townhouse / condo. I spent 3-4 months looking and ended up closing nearly 1 month later than I was supposed to. I was lucky enough to have landlords who simply charged me a monthly rate after the lease ended. They were super nice (very fair price, only rent d to students), I'd been there for 3 years and they didn't have a new tenant lined up. I really lucked out.
You can consider paying double rent / mortgage if you find a place early. The plus if this is you can take your time cleaning out and airing out the new house. And doing any minor painting or reno before you move in. Downside is that it gets very expensive for more than a month.
You could consider leasing month by month if that is an option. Also very expensive
You could put stuff in storage and crash at home / with a friend. You could maybe even make a hotel work if you're traveling a lot for work.
At the end of the day, it's best to have a contingency plan, because many things can happen. Your offer may not be accepted and you have to start your search again. Or you find the perfect house right away and are ready to buy months early. Or your closing date gets pushed back because the thousands things that need to get done are delayed
