California does not have a lot of job opportunities. I have been trying to teach for my second year and no jobs are available the last two years. Only Substitute teaching positions. I see on Ed join there are lots in Texas. Lots of families have moved out of California and Texas is one of the states that they have been moving to. I have friends in Texas and they love it, I would definitely look into Texas and their TCT requirements.
Unfortunately not where I am located. If I were to go back to where I grew up there is a ton. All small towns, however my husband is high up in his company and also does IT for his company. He’s been there 40 . Thank goodness I have had advice on my career from my father in law who was the head of CalSTRS.
You'll have to take some Texas history classes--yeehaw! Prepare to be underwhelmed by pay and teacher rights. Top end of salaries is about 70K.
Hell I’m already there 😂😂😂
You should check into "reciprocity." Lots of states accept licensure from another state (Not always every state, but California should transfer most places).
Even if they don’t have reciprocity, my friend had to take only two classes to be certified. They let her teach while taking these two classes.
Texas does not have reciprocity. Cost mr $500 get licensed, and that was with 15 years experience. They make you jump through tons of hoops… more than others. (I’m licensed in multiple states- trust me).
They are pretty great at helping you with that. When I transfered from KY to TX 10 yrs ago all I did is find an open position, emailed the principal that I was interested in the job.. Then had the interview and when I was accepted the county contacted me regarding transferring credentials and reciprocity.
I had to only take their tests. They didn't accept my Praxis tests. I was given one year to complete the requirements while teaching.
Question, why are you leaving CA?
One of my coworkers could not get a job in Texas because the area she was in was heavily Spanish speaking and she was not bilingual. They refused to hire her because of that issue and only that issue. She has been teaching for 15 years in many different states and her credentials (military spouse). So if you are bilingual, it may not be a problem, but check the requirements. They were hurting teachers too so it was insane that she could not get a job there.
Good to know…thanks 😊
Come to Alaska! Some places will pay for your housing. I live in the more mild areas and the pay isn't terrible, and I know that, moving forward, I'll get a minimum of 2K more each year.
