Married or not married?
Quick question regarding separate accounts: how do y’all decide how much to put in joint vs how much to put in separate? Particularly if one spouse (the lady) earns almost 2x the man.
On whether you should combine or how to combine?
We combined as soon as we got married and to be honest, I don’t remember the how being difficult. We each had a checking account at chase so we opened a joint account and just moved everything into that and changed direct deposits to that account. We each had a brokerage account and decided on fidelity and moved everything to a joint account. Do you have specific questions?
First I would say max out any TreasuryDirect I-series savings bonds for the year before consolidating bank accounts since just about any HYSA is not going to beat those. So per person you’ll be able to open a 10k savings bond. Then if you anticipate having children and have a long time window go for EE savings bonds also as they guarantee double what you put in by 20 years. So that’s about 40k worth off the table for the year since those bonds are capped at 10k. Then I would say look for a big bank bonus for opening a checking account and put deposits into that. From there, connect Mint and set up some buckets
