Private Equity and the Buy Side

Looking to transition to PE on the ops side. Anyone willing to answer some of my questions and shed some light on the industry/role?

I would start with Charles Aris and the other main headhunters for transitioning consultants. I would say my experience has been different than B1, comp should be meaningfully higher at every level

Not an easy transition, but there are several paths. 1) Work directly for a portfolio company. 2) Executing Ops role at large PE, doing lean and consulting at Portfolio Co’s. 3) Sr Expert corporate role to work with Portfolio Co leaders. Each has very different responsibilities and entry points.

Thanks - I’m looking more towards #2. Do you have experience in this space?

Have some friends that took roles like #2. They have enjoyed the roles. Mainly focused on cost optimization, leveraging lean methods, ZBB and others. Pay similar to consulting, with progression to carry based on performance and value creation.

What type of firm? How have you liked it?

What is comp like for a portfolio associate (pre-MBA) at a MM or UMM firm?

Had a background in IB and Consulting (restructuring side though). Got hired by a special situations fund, so far comp has been slightly higher than time in consulting (would of made more in banking) but I am paid on par with deal team. Work load is about the same, but with a lot more responsibility. Downside has been that you are a team of one and with that responsibility comes a lot more stress / pressure. Have learned a lot more then I would have expected and have already had interim management roles.

Found a water-bug (similar to cockroach) in my Aloft room in Raleigh. How many SPG points is this worth? Anyone with similar experiences?

Is recruiting moving slower because of Covid/WFH? Ie the time from: posting a job, selecting candidates, scheduling interviews, making an offer, etc?

Currently on track to end the year with 47 SPG nights (I already earned Platinum through stays). Worth it to burn 10,500 on 3 free nights just to get the 50 night gift?

Anyone else chase certain platform or functional skills based solely on the potential to make better money than what you were originally doing only to find that you don’t enjoy the area much at all

Negotiations ? - assumed an offer was coming from Company A, when it arrived it didn’t completely match talks, turns out recruiter was creative and now total comp package is 14% off target.

I feel bad admitting this because of the state of the world, but I had a great summer. After years of working in toxic environments with terrible people, getting laid off and having time to myself again was amazing. I finished personal projects. I got sleep. I read doorstop books that needed more attention than subway reading. And now freelance work is picking up (and I don’t hate it.) I even got Covid but only had mild symptoms. Banner summer for sure.

As a guy, I’ll say that the most startling change in this WFH new-normal is the fact that I’ve now seen 100% of the female colleagues on my team join videoconference meetings in their sports bras. No judgement or anything, just a huge change from the people I normally spend Mon-Thurs with in a team room.
