Looks like Kamala Harris is about to become the first FEMALE/ASIAN/BLACK United States Vice President. As many of us Asian Americans--children of Asian immigrants (just like Kamala)--we can be proud of this historic accomplishment, regardless of our political affiliations. Tremendous.

Would be great if she wasn’t a corrupt politician who basically started out in politics sleeping her way in, as the corrupt Willie Brown’s mistress who got appointed to state commissions she was unqualified for (got paid $160,000 for attending like 5 meetings a year). Then used Willie Brown’s political machine in SF to get elected as prosecutor. Never identified as an Asian American unless it was politically expedient. Played up her black roots big time even though she’s estranged from her father who departed early in her life, because that’s what’s politically beneficial. As prosecutor, supported strict drug laws and put minority parents in jail when their kids missed school. Then does a 180 and pretends to be progressive. Didn’t win ANY VOTES in the Democratic Party primary but basically gets selected to “brown” the ticket. Doesn’t have any REAL VALUES. Just in it for power and herself.

Look as if you take a genetic/ancestry test, I’ve got Chinese, Korean, Mongolian, Hmong, and Vietnamese blood, technically by science I’m “all” of those but I don’t get to claim ALL of them, neither does she by virtue of having Indian blood, the point is action/engagement/activity matters, if you can point to meaningful things she’s done for or her active participation in the Indian community, happy to be convinced otherwise

Has she ever claimed Asian in her life? This isn’t going to do anything for us, and her accomplishments are not our accomplishments.

Fair enough; agree to disagree. I still voted for her, but, to me, she represents a win for women and Black Americans -- not Asian Americans. I don't think I'm alone in thinking this way, either.

I think the issue here is that many Asians don't consider Indians among them, and often discriminate against them too. Kamala is an asian-american and there is no question about it. She has mentioned her Indian ancestry many times, she almost always talks more about her mom who is Indian than her dad who is jamaican. She has also been on Mindy Kaling's show telling her childhood, her mom and her favorite Indian cuisine. This is a glass ceiling that has been shattered for asian Americans and you have got to be stupid to think otherwise

like

Maybe. In the context of oppression in America, East Asians and South Asians are largely treated the same. Model minority affects all Asians.

Just listen to her speech. Highlights her mother's influence who can from India at 19 years old and how proud she would be. Then acknowledges black women and asian women, and all women. There should be no doubt on her intent of being an Asian American.

I’ve been hiding my immigrant history lately... Trump helped with that. Sigh...

#alleyship, especially within the Asian American community, is super important

C1 wins the thread 😆

You have it reversed. She is the first BLACK/Asian female VP. She walked out to a Mary J Blige song and stated unequivocally that BLACK women are the backbone of this democracy.

Thanks for admitting that my comment about colorism and racism among Asians is wholly true. Of course being rejected by a community impacts a person’s adaptation and identity. Your logic fell to pieces after that and especially after the name calling. If my words were “vapid”, you wouldn’t have had to write a whole essay which essentially proved my point. She can and could have shared a lot with the Indian community; however, even her own mom demonstrated she knew the score by stating she’d be raising two Black daughters. And let’s not pretend that Asians are a United community- Indians tend to not get along with other Asians. They are also virulently colorist. Koreans Chinese Japanese and Vietnamese people are not United. Finally , in the USA, people tend to get treated according to how they look. This is why “white passing” was a thing back in the day and “white presenting” is a thing today. I feel Kamala’s experience - My parents are from two different countries and cultures. I code switch from my Caribbean persona to AAVE to “Corporate speak”... Never quite feeling at home at any time. There seems to be a focus on openness to all and empathy towards others with this new administration. I hope it sticks.

Everyone here who feels she isn’t Asian enough, do you think that maybe has a little bit to do with her being Indian instead of being East Asian? I am not attacking anyone but I think this might need some introspection.

This is really not what it is, but everyone needs confirmation bias, I guess 🤷‍♂️

Indian. Indian. Indian Stop diluting her Indian ancestry and yes she has claimed Indian ancestry.

If we spend the next four years just arguing over whether Harris’ background qualifies her as Asian I could be happy. (Yes she’s Asian. It’s an And. There are always going to be people on this forum who don’t think she’s part of the community. Their loss.)

like

She's raised in India when a child but her mother wanted her to be accepted more and therefore 'raised her black' by going to a black church. Her lack of concrete identity is exactly what we need in this country. Obama was typecasted too much, I hope Kamala can raise the bar for diverse leadership.

likefunny

Is she ethnically Asian, Yes - by virtue of having an Indian mother she meets the litmus test. Has she claimed that shes asian, Yes. Has she done anything or shown an attachment to the Asian community to prove that she understands our challenges or truly connects with us, NO. She talked about being a “black” girl being bused as part of desegregationon the campaign (watch her first debate in primaries), she went to a black church growing up, she now associates herself as a Black Baptist (her mother was hindu and did try to introduce elements of Hindu to her), she attended an HBCU, she joined a black sorority, in law school she was President of the Black Law Students Association, she talks more of the struggles of being black in america, she may be half asian by blood but has disproportionately dedicated her time to her other half and not really backed by her actions

like

I mean there are a lot more Black people in America than Indian people, they have more organizations and groups. It's not like she had the option of whether to go to a "Historically Indian University" over a "Historically Black University", only the latter exists. This comment is pretty ridiculous. What do you want her to do, join an imaginary Indian sorority?

Hi all! I currently live in LA but my wedding next year will be in my hometown of Chicago. I plan to go wedding dress shopping soon in both LA and Chicago. If I find my dream wedding dress in Chicago, I’d like to order it to be shipped to a store in LA so that I can have my fittings throughout the year without having to travel back to Chicago. Is 50% commission a good “salary”? Just received an offer with the following details: - 50% commission. Stepwise increase by 5% for every $5k per month (e.g., 50% of first $5k, 55% of next $5k, etc) (Resets every month) - treated as independent contractor - no health insurance, no 401k - no hour requirement, WFH option, flexible hours - they cover bar dues, CLEs I feel like 50% is very high. Obviously being an independent contractor costs me a bit more, but does this look like a decent deal?
