Yup. My wife likes me better this way :)
For sure! I live in a smaller city with limited career opps. Traveling for work is like having two lives. High-paced, big city, career-driven from Monday to Thursday, and slow-paced family life at the weekends.
Plus my wife is super independent and hates me getting under her feet when I'm at home for too long :)
Same. Local commutes for one day are worse than the weekly flight, and it’s not like I actually do anything on the weekdays at home if I’m not traveling anyway. Also makes me treasure my weekends a bit more. The free vacations also help
I find I can organize my work and set boundaries better when I travel. when I am local or remote I tend to work much longer hours.
Good for you guys. I’m not sure how much longer I can do this...
I had convinced myself that I liked traveling and that I was more present during weekends for wife and kids. But I left a couple months ago (not for travel reasons) and more time at home has done wonders for my family. It’s definitely possible to be home every day and be present.
Not saying this is the case for everyone, but I’m just now realizing how much I bought into the idea that travel was a benefit for my family.
Do any of you feel this way and have kids?
I'm male and my spouse works full time as a finance/investments professor at an elite B-School. She finds it easier to continue her research late into the night after the kids are in bed when I'm away vs when I'm present, she says I create a distraction, so we are both more productive during the week and don't work much if any on weekends (random last minute proposals only)
100% agree with A1
No I burnt out after 5 years plus it’s not worth living in a box for life
Yes
Same
I used to love it, even when the kids where young. As my kids started getting older I felt I could no longer be an effective parent and felt terrible when I wasn’t there for my wife and kids when they needed me.
So each to their own, we all love/hate travel for different reasons
Same as A1. Had a local project once and it was a 90 min commute each way. Hated my life. Would much rather travel!
Been a road warrior for 25+ years and would have it no other way. Like many others have said I can control my work alot better than when home. Also, my better half travels as well and we meet in different cities for an alt travel weekend! Keeps our relationship fresh
