Throwing 1-2 bucks into a scratcher/lotto ticket every now and again just for shits an giggles is basically same as going into a casino. It's just a fun what-if game.

Doing it regularly in the hopes of winning the lotto is not the same thing and it usually means you need to spend some time thinking about what you want to do with your life and moving towards that goal. Might be career focused, might be a hobby, might be family or travel focused, who knows. But betting on the lotto is the least likely way to reach happiness and contentment

My dad always called the lottery a “tax on people who are bad at math”. Idk, I only went to college because I had lottery scholarships that allowed me to afford it (otherwise, it never would have been considered an option). If you look at it as a few dollars spent on entertainment and can actually enjoy it even when you don’t win, sure. Go bananas. Some kid like past me will thank you!

If the actual expected value was worth it for consumers the lottery wouldn't be in business

^ very different than consistently buying tickets on the hope of winning

They call it a tax on the dumb for a reason

Try Yotta savings. It’s risk free if you switch HYSA.

Thanks! Is there a way to see that, in case it changes?

I think if you levelset your expectations, then yeah a buck or two here or there for the tiniest hope that you could be a millionaire is worth it, IMO. Haven’t we all bought a powrball or mega millions and think “what would I do with a hundred million bucks?” It’s fun.

like

It is fun as long as you don’t spend much.

like

You miss 100% of the lottery tickets you don't buy

I go through phases of this when work is particularly hectic. Buy a ticket days before the drawing so I have enough time to fantasize about winning. It’s worth a few bucks a week for me. Haven’t bought one in a while.

Are you asking if gambling is good for society (ignoring the tax revenue it generates)? Seems like a stupid question

It used to be Dollar a dream. Now it is Two Dollar a dream…. Dream on

If your financial planing for future depends on winning the lottery, then it is bad. Otherwise throwing away 3 or 4 dollars once in a while is fun.

It's called dream equity

You’ll reap more emotional value buying 5 dollars of the s and p 500 every month and watching yourself actually make returns not get crushed by the poverty hammer every month because it’s fun to make poor people gamble to fund our schools instead of paying them a living wage and a pension

Hello, I am a 3rd year uni student graduating in December. I got an IB summer internship at one of the big 4. It’s going to be my first internship ever and I’m very grateful for it. What should I expect/How can I prepare? Also, I didn’t get the details of the position yet. Should I negotiate or accept whatever the terms are?

Hi LTI Fishes, I am new to this variable included pay structure. From my first company to current I am getting fixed pay only. So, I know how to calculate my in-hand salary with that. I can see here 10% is variable pay. I have some questions,

1. How much will be in-hand salary?

2. Is there any hidden component which may deduct from my salary?

3. How variable pay will be paid? monthly or quarterly or annually?

4. How much variable pay we will get by Average?

Junior associate looking for advice. I was handling a small claims case pretty much on my own (partner copied on emails but didn’t really do anything). We settled the case the day before the hearing. Several weeks later, plaintiff’s lawyer sent me a release his client would sign after receipt of funds. I screwed up and agreed to this (payment before signed release) because the case had already been dismissed. Now I can’t get ahold of him to get the signed release. Am I screwed? What should I do?

Thoughts on the below role?

Got messaged about an analyst job doing the preliminary discovery stuff including dashboards. But not for the business, but to give recommendations to data scientists about where to focus. Having been a modeling DS, I can't imagine why I'd outsource exploratory analysis. Anyone seen a team like this before?

Also worried about career prospects. I've been wanting to turn business facing, but becoming the only DA on a DS team seems like it'd be a dead end with promos?

I recently had a recruiter from FAANG reach out to me on LinkedIn. The position we discussed is exactly what I have been looking for, he said he would send me the direct link to apply and asked me to send him my resume.

Problem is, the link he sent me is to a different job. I followed up with him but he isn’t responding. Do I apply to the rogue job or keep following up with him? The link he sent isn’t a fit for my background and I can’t find the role we discussed in their open roles?
