Someone pulled the original email out that introduced PBB years ago. The progression has been something like 12.5%, 12%, 10%, 9%, 8% for a 5 rated senior manager. Never great, but especially bad since when the introduced it, it indicated likely growth in bonus and it has just been whittled away. Here's the biggest problem in my mind though: we missed an aspirational plan on top line by 0.5% in the US. Sure ... we missed and in Big 4 that equates to significant $$$'s. The big miss was in profit which indicates a margin problem. Expectations on margin have been increasing dramatically, which tells me we are being stifled by the bloat. Independence, QRM and other non-client serving professionals (aka "leadership" and back office) and partners (no, not everyone in these groups, but many) are eroding the profitability of the firm and causing retention issues of high performers on the line.
