No advice here, but CONGRATULATIONS 🎉🎊🍾🎈
Navigant 1 - Here are some things that I thought about / were important for me personally: I really wanted to be doing work that I truly enjoy long term, otherwise it’s tough to muster the motivation and energy to get there. I switched groups internally twice before I found the work that I enjoy doing, and the kind of projects that make me excited to get up in the morning. Don’t settle, and if you don’t like what you do, or aren’t getting the right support from leadership, or don’t admire the people you work for, move. As a woman, I’ve often felt that I need to assert myself in situations with other men who are my peers - dynamics like revenue and delivery recognition are where that plays out most often, so stand up for yourself and don’t let other people take credit for what you’ve contributed. You may surprise them if you are direct in your communication style (as I am), but they’ll learn to respect you. I have also focused on coaching other staff, many of them women, and have been really candid with my feedback and sharing what I’ve experienced. We need to pay it forward. The thing I am most proud of is that at this stage of my career I have a team around me of people who are smart, driven, and empathetic individuals who build people up instead of tearing them down. The congratulations that have meant the most to me have been those from my team, as I’m here in large part because they perceive me as a Director.
You made Director at 30!! Thats a GREAT achievement :) Congratsss!!! Any tips for your fellow women? ;)
Congratulations on the promotion and good genes!
I think well curated accessories, including shoes and purses, could make a big difference in quickly establishing your seniority. They’re small additions by could really elevate the simplest of outfits and in my opinion, even if people don’t recognize style or brands, they respond to an outfit that is well put together.
I would also pay attention to your hair. A stylish cut could make a huge difference.
Stress. It will totally age you.
I’m pretty sure I’m the same level (diff firm). Tips I started applying in the past year... 1) hair tied back for any serious interaction 2) speak more slowly and deliberately, lower pitch. Pause a lot. 3) depending on the client, but for large KO and final results always wear something I’d wear to a job interview.. it can be “instyle” but still on the conservative side...definitely not too “fun". It seems to be helping a lot since I had the same issues.. to answer your direct questions:
Leather bags (don’t care about brand). Quality shows.
For makeup, be balanced too much or too little will make you seem immature
I respectfully disagree about hair and such, if u personally do not want to make such semi permanent changes. I would look for longer dresses, fashion scarves held together by a cute pin, peal earrings. Make sure shoes and bag are clean and in good condition to avoid looking like the intern still in school. Low bun if long hair, avoid clips and scrunchies if short. If u really want to look like the older generation dress and stockings! Haha. This doesnt change a thing about who u really are and all can be changed after work. Think of it as a special work uniform :)
Make sure you take really good care of your skin and nails! It shows. Also I don't think you should change your personal style to look like the older generation. Maybe a little bit of length in your clothes but don't look like a grandma!
When I started wearing makeup people thought I was older. Agree about style of scarves / pearls or more “traditional items”.
Also something to think about is speech. Stories that are from college for example, I’ll still say my colleague or my friend to make the story cater to an older audience.
Attitude and confidence, your age doesn’t matter you’re there because you deserve it
Thank you for the love, support and tips on this thread! Any brands you like for splurge worthy and practical bags and shoes? I bought myself some black patent block heels and they’re now my power shoe, any other suggestions? Have been reluctant to pull the trigger on a designer bag because I want something that looks nice and also holds up with the wear and tear of 4+ flights a week. Also, thoughts on pearl necklaces? And what about make up? I typically use a B.B. cream and am out the door.
