Made the decision to go part time until my daughter is back in daycare. At this point, probably will be next summer. I’m worried it will affect my career but I can’t be her go to person and work full time anymore. I work every weekend and I’m constantly exhausted. I know my reduction in hours will put me at a level to not qualify for STD if I have a baby in the next year so now I’m anxious about that too. It took me all week to not feel guilty about going down in hours. Yes, my husband does help

The truth is, it’s going to impact your career. It’s going to slow it down a bit. I did it, and I went back to full time. When I came back I raised my hand for every experience I could, and I made it a point to show them I’m serious about my career here. In the end, you’ve got a 30-40 year career, a couple of years working less isn’t going to matter 10 years from now. It’s hard when you see people passing you up in the present, but I can say I have no regrets because the time I had with my kids is worth putting a promotion a year back. This is your career which means it goes at your pace. It’s not about anyone else.

And I , similar to you, was part time for a year.

You are a great mom and you are doing what is best for your daughter and your family right now. That is the most important thing. Try not to stress about long term impacts to your career. I work with a woman who was an early promote to partner who was part time for 5 years to raise her kids. I also know families where having one person go part time made them realize that spending more time at home fulfilled them more than a career ever could.

like

You still have sooooo much career left! It might slow things down in the short term, but you’re making amazing choices for your family. One day it’ll be a blip in your past, and you’ll be the success story to someone else who wants to do the same thing.

like

Well I had my meetings today - it’s official. I start part time next week. I’m so excited to come up with activities and things to do with my daughter each day. It’s such a weight off of my shoulders and I’m beyond excited to be able to actually take advantage of this opportunity of her being home. And guess what?! I got to keep a decent amount of my clients!!! 😊

Fantastic news! Congrats!

Can’t comment on bouncing back from reduced schedule, but I do have 3 kids so I know what you mean.

Ultimately you just need to focus on the reason behind why you’re doing what you’re doing (keeping her out of daycare and going part time) and if that reason is a priority for you, you’re doing the right thing. Assuming you’re keeping her home bc of Covid, if health/safety is the reason she’s home, then that should bring you peace of mind that you’re making the right choice.

like

You are right. Keeping her safe and getting back my sanity is what matters right now and I just have been so career focused that I feel like a failure but she is more important and so is my mental health

Anyone else go part time for a year and bounce back okay on your career path?

You've got this!

I made the decision to put my daughter in daycare at 3 months after a LOT of guilt and tears. I have to be honest - it's been the best choice for her. As it turns out, she got my shy, introverted nature, so having her in school from early on has really stimulated her social skills. She is in Pre-K now, and is just blossoming.

As much as we want to do playdates and socialize, it's hard as a working mom! Don't feel bad about needing the help. It might end up being really great for your little one!

I’m glad your daycare hasn’t had any spread.

I just don’t feel confident about sending her back yet so she will be home for a while.

Not hard and did not scare her, but the act of “aggression” took me by surprise and I felt terrible about it. I’d like to be more proactive about toddler psychology, what’s to come and how to react/ teach. TY!
