To be honest, this seems immature and insecure. Neither job precludes you from doing parts of the other. So why insist on some kind of made up title? It seems suspiciously superficial to me.
It would be a red flag to me, indicating you’re not able to make the jump into actual strategy work and need the account responsibilities to justify your cost
IMO, the best account people (especially the more senior you get) are very strategic and are a great partner to strategists. I would die without my ADs as partners. We get the best out of each other.
But if I had to do the account management aspects of that job, I’d be sunk. You’re watering down the positions
Just make sure you are putting them in a position where both titles, if slashed, actually do come into play and can be truly developed. If it's going to be heavier on one end of the spectrum, be upfront about it in the title and description. I was hired into exactly this scenario from being a designated strategist and told the role would be mostly strategy--the crossover was interesting to me so I bit. It turns out I never got the chance to do real strategy because they really were looking for an account person who can be strategic (shouldn't they all be?). I was account managing everything (and doing most of the digital work alone -- grossly under-resourced) on multiple clients so the only strategy I really got to do was block and tackle. It led to plenty of stress/resentment and, to be honest, I think it set me back in my career goals a bit because I had to recalibrate to get back into strategy at the level I should have been. My title at the end of the day means less than expanding my skill-set, producing work I'm proud of, and being able advance my career in a way that makes sense. Be respectful of that future for whomever you hire by managing their expectations (and your current team's) accordingly.
Would recommend leading with strategy in the title to set them up for success with clients/clients and team perceptions. It’s easier for people to understand that a strategist could also manage an account than it is to think an account person can lead strategy. While I personally very much disagree with this, I’ve found it’s a much bigger jump.
That’s an interesting enough combo to just slash it. Also, I’d be interested in hearing more about this role...
I feel that it would be really difficult to do account and strategy. Why not just be a creative strategist, content planner or comms planner?
Account Strategist
In the consulting world, I came across a similar role with the title Solutions Architect
DAD1 is dead on. My role is responsible for account things like my AD title suggests - selling, schmoozing, team management, billing, contracts, etc. etc. But because I'm in a discipline silo (social) we don't have any titles besides account titles (seriously) and we all divide the non-account work. No client is confused if their Social AD is a creative strategist, data scientist, art director, etc. But if their creative director sent them an SOW, it'd be bizarre. Be careful with a slash because one side is likely to prevail in perceptions of you, and it may not be the one you want. I'd recommend going for the title that advances you to the step after this, and socialize it as [Actual Title] & [what you also importantly do]. New business decks will probably do this anyway!
Slash. The person will likely not get any respect from creative or strategy
