Management consultant newbie here. As i enjoy working on quantitative works, i was recommended to pursue data analytics. What are the pros and cons of data analyst vs management consultant?

Data in focus v people in focus, but you already knew that.

Things like data cleanup are a daily part of data work, as slide making is air to the management consultant.

Both have to communicate with others. Data people do it much less, but have to show harder to explain things when they do. Management consulting is a bit closer to sales in that sense, more intuitive.

If consulting gets old like it does for most, data has more exit opportunities. Traditional consulting has fewer but sometimes much higher career level exits, though these don't necessarily pay better than the data ones depending on where you land.

Do you have a more specific question?

Trying to figure out next career move. Im 26. What path would you chose?

1. Currently: Senior associate in GE @ secondaries firm. Path to partner. Will have $1b AUM with 3rd fund raised. WLB is great - avg 40 hrs/week. Culture is rough b/c partner dynamics. Leadership is uninspiring. 5 days a week in office with rare work remote option. Don’t love only doing secondaries.

2. Move to VC or another GE shop, one that does more primary. Find more inspiring people to work around, better mentors.
