Time and again I feel like there are two very different groups in this bowl. Consulting as I know it and then that other type with “never eat hours”, “overtime” and associates leaving whenever they feel they shouldn’t be working anymore.
If the client is gone, you have no work left, and it’s after 5 then leave. This is not complicated. I don’t ever want to work for someone who would expect me to sit there and do nothing just because they have work to do, how ridiculous.
Oh I said sorry I cannot stay late today then and left
WTF is overtime
You need to grow a back bone and say no
BCG please stop advocating for rubbish. A Manager comes late and then asks if you can stay with them? What is this, 1800s? And we wonder why the turnover is so big in Consulting? Don’t give me the crap that we are overpaid as there are people making more in industry. Treat your people nicely and they will stay, that doesn’t include asking someone to hangout with you because you chose to come late to work. Also, it is wrong to penalize them at year end as this has nothing to do with a client deliverable.
Why do you need to be “there” til 9pm? Can’t you do whatever needs to be done from your hotel room after a quick dinner and/or workout break?
The correct amswer is "no"
Hahaha. I wonder what it’s like to leave the office at 9.
8:30 to 11 of straight up working and no breaks is the norm for my manager.
If I try to push back, I get subjected to a verbal tirade.
^ OPs post mentioned nothing about manager asking for help, only manager staying late and wanting company
Yeah, that’s fucked up. But it happens to most of us. Leadership just doesn’t care because it doesn’t impact them.
BCG1 I think first years at Accenture get over time pay lol
OP will post later in the year
“Why didn’t I get promoted / larger bonus?"
A manager that shitty isnt going to stick up for them year end or even remember they helped.
Avoid narcisissists. Dont cowtow to them
If you hand over your deliverable and there is nothing else to do, why would you stick around just cause your manage doesn’t know how to manage his time? I have been at this for 12yrs so don’t give me some crap about “real consulting”. This is straight up poor management.
@M2 - yes I hear you and have dealt with that too. However as I now manage teams, I prefer to give my team some autonomy regarding evening work. If they want to stay, fine. If they want to leave for dinner /workout and work from their hotel room later, fine by me. I hated being micro managed and really try to avoid doo g that to others.
My folks I try to get out by 6, even if I need to work late. We are not doing heart surgery and anything can wait for the morning.
Yea EM1. Sure.
Am I in a different industry ? I’m in S&O and I stay till my manager stays. I thought that’s what we signed up for? This isn’t industry. I’m genuinely confused - isn’t this normal? So what if he didn’t come in late, I as a SC wouldn’t peace out if my manager is busting his ass in the office
Accenture 5, no Boss will ask you to stay home when you’re sick but a true leader/Manager will
There are great leaders out there, problem is the plethora of sub par managers who give Consulting a bad rap
