It could be a clever tactic by a devious individual. Who wants to drive you out of the firm.
I hate jerks. There is plenty of room for everyone to be successful. No one needs to step on each other.
The best way to deal with a micromanager, I've found, is to just get work done. Get so much work done that you're asking them questions before they can ask you questions. Fight fire with fire. It blows at first, but pretty soon you know the material better than they do and they'll start trusting you more on your own. It hasn't not-worked for me so far.
Exactly! Best thing you can do with a micro-manager is over communicate. At some point they will tell you to ratchet down the communication. It’s all about them getting to trust and know your work style.
My manager does the same thing. I told her I can’t finish my task if she keeps asking questions and to group them. She promised me headphone time. Literally as I’m putting in my headphones, she stops me and asks me status. Like you just asked me at the beginning of the convo we just had! I got nothing done because I was talking to you so yes, nothing changed.
As a manager I avoid micro managing by setting a reasonable deadline when things are done. If they don’t finish the small task by then I get involved. If it is done then I give them the next task and set the new deadline.
With that I also let them know if they get stuck and it causes a delay to reach out to me early and not wait until said deadline to tell me they didn’t know how to do it.
There is many other techniques that I use but overall my team is happy and is productive and I don’t expect any late hours nor do I micromanage.
Any way to switch teams after your busy seasons? Agreed that microManagers or Senior microManagers are the worst.
Managers micromanage when there is a very tight deadline (1-2 weeks) or if your team isn’t pushing stuff to them to review so the manager doesn’t actually have anything to do on that client and can’t really charge their time. If you’re a senior & you’re working on something complex & tedious then you need to make sure your staff is getting several things completely done daily. If you’re a staff you need to stay late, put in more hours everyday and get things done. A busy manager does not have time to bug you every few minutes. A bored manager does though.
Yeah can we get an example?
Sounds like you’ve got work to do
I’m literally dealing with this now roflmao ....frat time I have ever been micromanaged. It’s a new feeling and they seem to ignore that I am a manager and I have other shot that needs to get done hahaha. But I’m quiting so I tell them honestly.
I just got out here...you asked me to do this and I f been on this call with you and then you asked me after the call like 1 min later on status....
However as a manager I do understand sometimes when I ask redic questions like that I don’t consider a lot of things so when someone puts things in perspective it makes me realize oh shit they are right....
In summary my advice would be just be honest around what you are capable of and what your other commitments are. If you don’t they will assume you have nothing else to do and questions why it takes you so long to do something so simple ....I learned that some people don’t find a task I find to be simple so quick and easy to do because they didn’t grow up learning and experiencing the same things I did.
