From an Analyst's perspective, I've alternated between a 5:30 AM and 8:30 PM flights which wasn't bad at all. I've also been on the 6 AM for a year. I think it highly depends on your client's expectations and the duration of the project. At the end of the day, if you make them take the 6 AM, it's important you communicate WHY you've made your decision (not just because "that's how it is"), maintain an open line of communication for potential one-off scenarios, and hold everyone on the team to the same standard - that's what creates trust/respect between Analyst/Manager. Giving them what they want just to be buddy-buddy isn't much of a reason, and if they still complain, they should find a new line of work.

Lol @ all of this, especially considering the firms constant preaching of flexibility and work life balance. Technology allows us to work smarter, but only as much as the "stuck in their ways" leadership allows it to. So grateful for my manager and director who understand the importance of balance and drawing the line on "client expectations". A persons performance is directly tied to their wellbeing. And y'all actually wonder why turnover is so high? YES, this is the job we signed up for but this mentality of burning people into the ground because that's the way it has always been done is such a simplistic, robotic, and unintelligent way to manage people.

Alternate weeks with the 6 am and flying Monday night (WFH Monday)

Ok if 5 hours of work is done by the time they land

Nope! Take the 6am

like

Nay. 6am is what we all take. Fly in Sunday night, take the 6am, or get out of consulting.

I can't believe the amount of people here that have no value for their comfort / well being. A 6am flight for somebody in NYC means waking up around 4am. If you think it's reasonable to ask somebody to do that EVERY, you need to re-evaluate why your job is so much more important than sleep, comfort, and well-being. Make all the fun you want of "millenials", just don't complain when they hate working for you and you have no junior network to help on proposals / PRD.

Taking an 11am flight is pretty unreasonable in the sense that it almost writes off Monday -- almost hard to take your analyst seriously as it's obviously so misaligned with client services. Either you fly early Monday, or late Sunday or Monday to ensure you are working. The need to be in Monday morning I think is dictated by client context. Obviously goal is to be sustainable, which is why if Monday evening is an option I think it's a great way to boost team morale.

like

Ugh, millennials. Perception MATTERS, whether you like it or not. Yes, you're less productive when you wake up at 4am. Personally I also am more productive when I work from home in sweats but when I'm working for a business formal banking client, I suck it up and keep to their hours and dress code.

like

Yay. Your analyst will like you more and perform better than if you force them to wake up at 4am every Monday.

like

I'm a Partner who typically takes 5:15. Big nay.

Analyst here, I take the 5 am every Mon morning and never once have seriously thought about taking the 10 (gets me in around 1). The morning is never fun but in a way, I signed up for the potential for crap flight schedules when I accepted this job out of college.

like

Damn, y'all making me thankful here. All my projects I've flown out around 745-8 and not had an issue. Can't believe 6am is considered "normal"...

like

I'm not saying it's not normal for YOU but obviously it's not normal for this person. Just because it's "normal" for me to be awake at 1am, doesn't mean I should expect it from you. Also, I'd argue that less than 5% of people wake up before 4am and less than 1% actually enjoy it; so what you're asking for is universally "not normal" (I get that Consulting is different, just not sure why we need to "impress" clients by being there at 9am if it means waking up at 4am).

like

I completely understand the importance of perception and making the extra effort; however, that doesn't need to mean waking up at 4am every Monday. I did that when I was an analyst and it sucked so if I can make somebody's life on my team better by being flexible, I try to. It's about working style and I'm shocked by the lack of understanding shown here. I don't mind working until 11pm, but I understand some people might. Our clients are also human beings, if you explain to them that the team will be in by 10, most won't care.

like

And as a FYI because some people here seem to be way out of touch, M/SM/PPDs can get a reputation amongst junior folks (Analyst, C, SC) for always expecting shitty hours and being unreasonable. Some talented junior staff will avoid projects with those "leaders" just because of that, trust me.

like

Pussies! Why are you even letting them go home for the weekend??

like

Also, I don't even know why 6am is a question. 6am is standard flight time. I could MAYBE see asking if the options were 5am and 11am, but this is ridiculous and entitled.

like

I'm also surprised by people's attitude of "well I did it so so should you." Times are changing people. Unless it's absolutely necessary I don't see why there can't be accommodations for an alt schedule on alternating weeks. I get that perceptions matter, by maybe the perception should be that we are a firm that cares about our people's well being.

like

It's a 6AM FLIGHT for christ sake... we're not asking them to suit up and go fight overseas. The ridiculousness of some attitudes on this thread is unreal. Sleep on the plane, grab a coffee, get into the office
