Managing an offshore TCS team, they’re actually so incompetent I wanna jump off a building instead of dealing with them. Do you guys have the same experience?

Generally speaking - important to understand cultural nuances when working with India teams. They are generally very hard working folks, and you may need to introspect if it is a case of certain bad apples, or need a better communication approach to keep them in sync with your expectations. Some things that have worked in the past when working with offshore vendors -

1. Daily end of day touchpoints to make a strong handoff
2. Expand participants to full team over just key members
3. Encourage culture of them asking questions
4. Have them summarize the key asks (allows you to validate their grasp)
5. Have an analyst track action items for you (it is a lot easier to delegate chase them kind of work)
6. Ask for resource changes if there are bad apples or least make sure to share feedback through appropriate channel

All my comments are with an assumption that you are not the problem :)

Find an assertive and positive way to enforce timeliness expectation for meeting. As a father of 12 month old, I can attest that sometimes circumstances are unavoidable

I have great respect for TCS - they recruit from top colleges in INDIA and have a really good training program , and have great client focus . At half the revenue of Accenture , they have twice the market cap of Accenture . It’s a well run company .

When multiple vendors divide the work - friction is bound to happen . When TCS does both the client facing and offshore work, they coordinate and communicate very effectively. It is not easy when you sit 10K miles away from the client and try to interpret instructions .

Why this dissing on staff workers? Why do they have to be “top” talent from “top” colleges when even our executive leaders here in USA usually don’t come from the ivies? This is all just ethnic and socioeconomic snobbery.

Most of us got lucky in the lottery of birth family and location and then we strut around as if we are the ultimate answer to all questions. I used to think medical profession bred arrogance didn’t realize consulting does the same!

Complain if the staff workers don’t work hard or don’t take your direction with the right attitude. As for the rest, making it is successful is up to you.

You need a different communication style. Tell them exactly what you need and they will deliver. Leave any space for them to make decisions and that's where the trouble starts (they have zero context)

I’ve found that with the right direction the offshore team does a decent job. The onshore TCS team (local staff) is 10 times worse than the offshore. Been on multiple projects with them this past year.

like

Offshore: always late to meetings
Onshore: hasn’t shown up to the past 4 meetings

I’ll pick offshore but I’d rather just work with D USI.

these pure play companies are there for very cheap labor. the employees just need a job or stepping stone for most to work overseas. once they are overseas (outside of India), many of them are staffed in roles they have not done before or doing the minimum to keep their jobs and their statuses. Don’t think it’s an issue with the resources really but more of the brains behind these pure play indian companies taking an opportunity of the needs of the market (i.e. beings that can breathe)

Why not just hire people from Big4 India? Slightly higher rates but those resources are as productive as onshore ones. When I joined as an analyst I worked with some consultants from USI - they were smart, motivated and easy to work with. Probably delivered more work than me and definitely billed a lower rate.

Define incompetent? As EY mentioned, what’s your communication style? Is this a consulting engagement or implementation related? I have worked with some great folks but they need to be told what needs to be done,do appreciate they are not near the client site and may not fully understand the domain..that’s where we come in..Developers in general operate very differently, they are focused and many I have come across are very introverted, though they know the answer they may not speak up...also cultural nuances, just don’t jump the gun..have some empathy

like

They typically reflect the competence or lack of it of the onshore leads. Aka yourself. So deal with it.

Nice blanket statement 👏

Unpopular opinion: I like working with offshore teams.

All that D1 has explained is very actionable and yields good results. I worked for a WITCH , you have to adapt your leadership style.

I love working with offshore teams from Deloitte USI, my experience with TCS has been horrible.

Great advice here already. You could also try frequent positive reinforcement. Encouraging and praising one person can also make others in the team a little more accountable. Works well only if you have not burnt bridges yet.

In my experience they are only as good as the SOP they have. Not much independent thought outside of that.

Yes that’s why they’re around. Clients bring us in to build proof of concepts, set up the project and do KT. After that offshore resources will give the bigger bang for the buck.
