Managing people seems like the only way to avoid an early career plateau. If you’re managing a team, why do you think you were given the opportunity over others? Has anyone been hired to a new company as a first time manager? Or did you work your way up to managing counsel at one company?

Worked my way up, I guess, though not something I ever desired or affirmatively sought out. More like other people kept just getting out of the way and when there was a need I was left standing as the obvious choice.

Refreshingly honest (and describes how so much of our lives actually unfold).

First opportunity was a case of being in the right place at the right time, and being reasonably experienced. About 10 YOE at the time.

I would say I worked my way up, but with a strong idea that I wanted to run an office. No prior experience though so have done a lot of work (books, conferences, executive peer group) to help make up for the lack of experience.

I recently lateraled (3rd hear) into a biglaw firm from a clerkship just before the start of the fiscal year (Oct. 1). I’ve been out on a few matters and have worked on some clients, but this will be the second month in a row I’ve billed under 150 hours/month. I’ve been told by partners and associates to enjoy the lull but I can’t help but feel like I’m not being productive. I also feel like if I ask the partner or seniors for more work again it will genuinely annoy them. What should I do?

Additional Posts in In-House Counsel

Thoughts on when a contract is silent as to whether liability is uncapped? We typically cap liability at contract price, but this particular heavyweight co. wants TCs accepted as is. Their terms disclaim consequential damages but there’s no language at all about whether it’s capped or uncapped. If a K is silent as to this, is it implied that both parties have agreed to uncapped? Or does it go to reasonableness standard?

I just received an offer for a job I am very excited about. Base is within reasonable range and I will likely go back and ask for a bit more there. The company also offers a yearly cash bonus based on the performance of the company as well as a stock grant. Those are determined based on percentages of base salary. My question is: are those percentages typically negotiated or set based on position?
