Since no one knows how the virus will be once the fall flu season kicks in, its hard to say whether any layoffs will kick in. And if they do, who goes is a matter of firm philosophy. My firm - Vault 25 hasn’t laid anyone off in either 2008 or 2020, and we don’t expect to. But if we did I suspect that low performing associates would go before staff members. If your post is a roundabout way of asking “I’m slow; should I be worried about being laid off,” I doubt anyone can give you reliable information, because there are way to many unknown facts. I would work hard on taking care of yourself and contributing however you can — billable hours, CLEs, pro bono, firm committees, etc. your firm should have some mechanism for moving work to people who aren’t busy. Make sure you max out your opportunities, even if it means working outside your area and even if it means doing work you don’t enjoy. Firms notice who is and who isn’t making an effort. You don’t want to be noticed for slacking or failing to do everything you can to keep yourself productive.
My post was exactly a roundabout question about layoffs. Makes sense, thanks so much for your response!
