It’s diversity AND inclusion for a reason. The numbers are important, and beyond that - it’s important to not make people feel like the “other” in the room. For example, one Black person on a team who is constantly made to feel different (ex “can I touch your hair?” Or little comments and slang that are only used with the Black person) vs one Black person on a team who is not singled out in ways that focus on the color of their skin.
July 2019 census estimates show the US population is ~40% POC 13% is African American/ Black
If companies have less than 13% POC representation, then they are heavily underrepresented
AM1- your point is just a red herring, but I guess I was unclear. I was intending to refer specifically to Black, rather than all POC. We’ve had a number of forums at my company and one theme was that Black employees felt as though they were the only black person on their team - hence my question. Just trying to educate myself and be a better ally.
Figured that was the case, but moving forward POC= people of color and refers to pretty much anyone who isn’t white
