I have been in Therapy since childhood. Grew up in India, Bangalore. I have gone through at least 5 therapists. It works sometimes and it does not work. You have to keep trying till you find a sweet spot with your therapist.
Thanks. Curious to know why you felt the need to change therapists, and what was the sweet spot you are referring to. For instance, was it down to their style: how harsh/ brutally truthful the therapist was, for what you could handle? Or was it because you felt the therapist wasn’t up to their job, that they weren’t understanding your issues or even if they did, perhaps because they may have not suggested solutions that worked for you at the time? How does one guard against taking an incorrect decision, especially when they are in a vulnerable space?
Born and raised here— helped me a lot. But some of it is trial and error because finding the right therapist take time. All my friends (brown and non brown) are in therapy and we really like it.
I’m glad it’s not as taboo anymore
It’s based on your personal needs. Things to consider are: race/ethnicity of therapist, whether they understand/relate to immigrant issues/gender issues, whether the therapist is understanding of our profession, etc.
It’s like choosing a doctor or a university or a job. It depends on your personal needs.
You’d expect surprised but when I was hitting a wall with therapists in the world I used instagram to follow some mental health accounts and find the best people for my issue before signing up with them. Sometimes going to a counselor and striking out can be disappointing over and over, and expensive too. This was a way for me to get immediate help while also looking for a long term solution.
Marital therapy only works when BOTH spouses want it to work and pour out their heart and soul to the therapist.
It’s more about having a safe space to vent out and get some decent advice on how to manage conflict and expectations.
There’s no magic bullet but you HAVE to be open minded.
If one person is cynical or going in with a negative attitude, it’s not going to help.
On a humorous note check out this scene from Family Man where they’re in therapy:

Unfortunately, this is the reality 🤣
Enthusiast
I know a lot of my friends and me included have taken therapy at various stages of our life. If you need help you do. We don’t shy from taking help when we have physical ailments. Infact in our desi society heart disease/cholesterol is so openly discussed then why stigmatize mental health which can actually affect each and every aspect of your physical health if left untreated.
Also what you see on TV more often than not are drawn from actual experiences🤷🏻♀️.
