Married peeps - do you share one credit card (add other as an authorized user) or is it best to have separate credit cards?

Share bank accounts, but have separate credit cards that get paid in full each month. We are pretty much on the same page as far as spending and saving goes so this is what’s always worked for us.

like

Joint bank account for paying house bills. Otherwise, everything, including credit cards, is separate. We kept whatever financial situation we had prior to getting married. We have added each other as authorized users on a couple of cards, but never use those. Only there in case of emergency.

share bank accounts and credit cards . naturally i take care of paying bills . have adult conversations on spending habits if it's an issue

Depends - what are you trying to get out of a specific card? If trying to maximize sign up bonuses it makes sense for both of you to get your own cards. If just looking for a general card to use - setting up one spouse as an AU makes sense - all practical benefits typically apply to AUs

Nope. We have separate cards and I would not have it any other way. It’s not just about the fact that I don’t want my spouse to worry about paying my bills but it’s also about privacy. We don’t need to know where the other one was, what they ate, what they bought, etc. at all times!

Never married, but was in a relationship for 10 years that I ended. KEEP EVERYTHING SEPARATE.

Well, My ex husband actually maxed out two of the credit cards. Probably and definitely my fault for trusting him with them.
He was the one paying bills etc... Long story short, I paid half of the debt when we divorced.

I am never doing this again, even if I marry the best person in this entire world.

It is not a bad idea to actually share. It’s just that you think you know people until you don’t. I would have never imagined in a million years that he would actually use an account I actually thought was paid off. I just never asked him to close it became we were trying to buy a house and didn’t want the credit hit.

Long story short, it wasn’t his fault 100%, I allowed it to happen so it won’t happen again.

We share a credit card and each bank account

Depends on your spouse's habits and job. If I could go back in time I wouldn't.

I think it’s supposed to be great. I pray none of you take advantage of the other. Sharing is not the issue at all.

I regret sharing Because he took advantage of it.

We don't share except to add an AU for specific cards, mostly because doing so makes you eligible for only one sign up offer. That said, we both have full access to both sets of accounts and always have

One credit card, makes it easy to pay each month.

We mostly have separate credit cards but aggregate everything in personal capital (or your could use Mint or something else) so there is full transparency and cc are autopaid from the same account.

We do them separately for the reasons mentioned above, mainly for flexibility in getting the cards and bonuses we want. We don't churn, but we are aware of those strategies and do each have our own versions of a couple cards that had huge bonuses and also some that allow you to choose your bonus categories so we can choose different categories based on our individual spending habits.

For example us bank cash+ allows you to choose two 5% off categories so I choose utilities as one one and pay all the utilities with my card while she chooses other categories.

If you are concerned about transparency I'd argue two separate cards where each of you know the other's login is more effective and helps with budgeting. Usually when you have an authorized user it just lumps all transactions together and you can't tell who made the purchase. Seperate might also make it easier to spot fraudulent purchases rather than just assuming it was your spouse and ignoring it.

I keep everything separate except one bank account we use together. I have a lot of stuff on auto pay on my card and so does my spouse so too much of a pain to consolidate.
