Maybe a naive question but what’s the difference between a Roth IRA and Traditional IRA? Is it same as pre-tax and post-tax IRA? Which one is better?

Roth = post-tax contributions with tax free growth, Traditional = pre-tax contributions with taxes paid on withdrawal. Which is better depends on your personal situation - time horizon, current income vs. projected income, beliefs about the future of the tax code, other retirement income streams projected, desire to pass on wealth to others, etc

I am 31. I have $750k in assets and 400 in liab. Net worth is 350. Largest assets (excluding real estate) are 120k in 401k, 40k in brokerage, 20k in crypto, 25k cash. Own property totaling $550k (2 condos) but debt of 350k so 200k of my net worth is in real estate. Student loans of 30k. Thread continued 👇🏽

Always been a fan of FIRE and reading about it has definitely helped my finances but I can’t help but wonder if the movement is more about lifestyle change than early retirement.

After you achieve FI,you basically have to maintain the lifestyle that got you there.

What if you want to go on a lavish vacation or buy that flatscreen TV? Are you supposed to do away with material goods entirely? I suppose you could keep working for discretionary $ and live off interest but then you’re not retired.

Do people tend to age out of wanting to FIRE?

In your 20s-30s, you don’t know much, you’re told what to do, you have few financial resources so you are tied to your job. Under these circumstances it makes perfect sense why you would want to FIRE asap.

But eventually you advance up the ladder, you are now the boss and your people do all the grunt work. You also have built up expertise which makes the job easier. And you are making the best money of your life. FIRE is no longer so pressing.

Where do I begin figuring out the actual execution of retiring? e.g if net worth is > 4mm at age 35, how would one figure out what FIRE lifestyle would be now versus coasting with an income for a few more years? I realize this is a pretty dumb question.

new to investing. have done some research - reading blogs and a few books on investing. I still have the question of do individuals that take the index fund route… do you all purchase the same funds for different accounts? Example, would you invest in VTSAX across a brokerage and roth account, or would you take a different approach for each account?
