Maybe I'm too much of a economist/ accountant but I don't believe the wage gap in the US is accurate. I believe it has more to do with career choices and the % of women who stop working to raise a fam

That's actually exactly it, OP. In the same job, men and women are typically paid about the same not accounting for differences as a result of salary negotiations, which men are typically better at since women are typically nurtured not to rock the boat. But women are also typically drawn to the softer sciences, teaching, social services, etc. since these have been classically feminine professions. Professions with higher than average pay such as engineering and programming have predominantly more men. So when averaging women's pay to men's pay it seems as if women are making less on the dollar. But of course, an apples to apples comparison would prove that ridiculous. If businesses could get away with paying women less than men for the same work, they would only hire women.

^ because everyone here is blinded by the fact that sure, in this professsion everyone starts at the same salary as associates, but over time the gap can widen and oftentimes it widens in favor of the men. Who gets the higher raises? The favorites? Who tends to be the people picking favorites? Old white men (for now. The stats for upper management are still skewed in their favor). Who do people usually pick as favorites? People like themselves. Get some perspective people, it's not always going to be as equal treatment as it is in your first couple years of your career when your tie-out skills are the same as the next person's. Of course, that's not to say we're not moving in the right direction bec we are, but we're a little road away from full equality.

Ah yes, economists and their "beliefs." That's how it all works!

like

Wow. Just wow. So you all are mid-20's (1st-3rd Year) and are experts based upon your experiences? Everyone who has documented the pay gap is just wrong? FP

like

^couldn't agree with you more, RSM1. It will even out and the strides taken over the past 50 years is the direct reason for that. I just don't believe it's prevalent issue that should be pushed. Like we should enact a bill making minimum wage higher for women? Or promote women faster then men? People have to pick their battles better and realize the wage gap is an economic result that will catch-up to its self.

The wage gap is all bunch of B.S.

like

The "wage gap" does not show the difference say in the same position, just shows the average vs the average. Obviously, in 15 years it will be smaller to non existent, many of the baby boomers the case was man is the bread earner and wife works part/time or even fulltime but less demanding, lower salary of a job. We'll get there but it will take time.

like

The whole $.70 to a $1 is a farce. Do some research

like

The wage gap is much more difficult to measure in a profession like ours where compensation is largely tied to qualitative performance evaluations. Perfect example- all new hires directly out of college (within the same office) start at the same salary. In 2-3 years time there could be a 10k difference between the highest and lowest paid person in that class- male or female being on the high or low end based on performance. The wage gap does exist, but pay differentials in our industry are typically due to either life choices that out your career second or the inability to negotiate- not gender!

@pwc3, just stating what i have witnessed and seen throughout my life. This is not a mens activist post. Fair pay is something everyone has a right to.

like

We already have the fair pay act. Any company that pays someone more based on gender, religion, or sex, is liable for suit i believe. Also, seniority is something to take into account too.

like

Pwc3, I'm a women. 😂 I just wanted to see if other people thought about it the same way I do. I should've mentioned that earlier

like

The new issue is less men graduating school and getting "good" jobs. If trend continues you'll be hearing about a wage gap the other way around in 10 years.

like

I agree, OP. There are big issues out in the world, and the "wage gap" is not one of them. I am a woman as well.

like

You're correct, OP. The wage gap is largely a Leftist talking point in order to keep younger women on the Democrat Plantation.

like

Woman here. You should all listen to the podcast called "The True Story of the Gender Pay Gap" by Freakonomics. It actually talks about several reasons for the difference between male and female pay that are for factors other than gender/discrimination based on studies by a Harvard professor.

like

@Manager 1, that detailed report is bogus. It literally explains that the pay gap they present is caused by both the career choices women and men make and the fact that mothers more commonly take time out of the workforce than fathers, and have lower earnings when they return than those who didn't leave. It also bases the gap presented on median weekly earnings, but conveniently leaves out the fact that the male median weekly earnings are generated by working 7.91 hrs/day while the female weekly earnings are generated by 7.21 hrs/day (per bls time use data).

There's a lot of backstory to this but I can only type so much SO I've been with my company for 10.5 hours and just found out they've increased their base pay for starting employees $3-5/hr. I have received my annual 3-4% raises, only because I always make sure to ask for it, but nothing more. They didn't even acknowledge my 10 year anniversary with the company and it's a pretty small company (less than 100 employees). I feel I should get a $3-5/hr raise since the base pay was raised. Thoughts?

I left KPMG after 7 years after being passed over for Director promotion. I left to start a medical business. 3 months in, my partner and I grossed $130K in sales w/ a 60% margin.
