I get that, but it’s almost like a visceral reaction from some long time occupants/natives if you dare say anything bad about the Big Apple that I haven’t witnessed from other cities

Lol if I am paying New York taxes to support the city’s infrastructure, and if I live, sleep, work, eat, and socialize here, the I absolutely have the right to love and hate the city lol. Equal tax = equal rights.
I think part of the vehement defense of NYC is due to the incredible cost of living here. High sunk cost makes people want to defend their own decision making.
My friends from Detroit are the same way - i think every city has its “townies”. Places like Charlotte are so transitional that few people defend it.

I actually agree with them. There are some nuances to life in NYC that you simply can’t put into proper context after just a few years.
