This is strange. The CW/AD team is needed to see everything through to the end, and who understand what has gone on before the shoot. Plus it’s part of the training of a CW. You need to know how to do it yourself.

You shouldn’t have to ask. It should be presumed.

This is good to hear. My exp is different that probably most. In a hybrid digital marketing role for 4 years (while also CW) and went to a few, then a junior after portfolio school in 2020 but no shoots bc Covid. Now mid and we have in person shoots as of this month but no dice yet.

So it sounds like I’m the minority here but I’ve had to fight to be on shoots ever since I was a junior. Usually agencies have said for budget reasons they can only afford to have one CD on the shoot, other times it’s because there’s no sound/lines (just VO after the fact) but either way it’s trained me to be vocal about my desire to see a project through and be on the shoot from the briefing. Usually when I’ve brought this up to a CD or befriended the account people, they find a way to make it happen.

like

This is how it used to be. Modern ad world now will just have the CDs or ACDs take over. That’s in addition to not giving them enough time to mentor young talent. Not good for the long term.

Do you see writers from other teams on other accounts going on shoots? If so, it’s probably a problem with whoever is holding the purse strings for the production budget. It should mostly be up to the producer, but in this case I’m willing to bet it’s coming from account. You could try explaining to both that you absolutely need to be there to handle issues with on-the-fly script changes and the like. Works best if you can point out a specific problem that was expensive to solve and wouldn’t have happened if you’d been there, but you can go hypothetical if that hasn’t happened yet. You also might benefit from pulling in your CD. (If you don’t see other writers going on typical shoots, I think you’re not going to have much luck until you end up somewhere else.)

like

I don’t see many writers going as of yet. Maybe that’ll change or not. Started at a new place this year and all shoots were remote until about now (still with precaution). I’ll keep pushing for instances that would need my presence as the world opens back up. Or keep an eye out for a new job.

The reality is this is often dictated by clients. Sometimes contracts will even stipulate the max number of people they will pay for travel on any given production - usually 4 (2 creatives, 1 producer and 1 account). Granted, there are loopholes like when you are combining 2 productions into 1 and need multiple teams there. But clients typically want the most senior person overseeing their biggest production budget investment. That said, I try to manage the financials on my accounts to allow the ability to fund junior team members to attend. It’s a great way to keep people motivated on an account and it’s just the right thing to do. Not all accounts have this ability and individual agencies might have their own restrictions on what can be non-billed.
