Former lawyer here, where we did itemize bills per call and elaborate on what was discussed in the bill. They don't learn anyway.

At the end of the day this is not money coming out of someone’s personal bank account; it’s budgetary funny money. Spending it doesn’t inflict personal pain or consequence to the parties in the meeting so the behavior would never change.

D1: I have had great private sector clients. One incredible email: a client cc-ed his boss (our senior client) to add clout. Instead the senior guy replied ‘stop bothering the consultants. Their day rate is half your monthly salary’.

Legend.

Currently working in public sector though and, as a taxpayer, I am weeping.

I currently have a Cap One Venture card. I have had it for a couple of years now but I am interested in upgrading to a Venture X card.

No promotion has been offered to me to upgrade my existing Venture card to a Venture X card.

Should I wait until that promotion is offered to me? Or would it be dumb to apply for a Venture X card separately and a) hold both cards or b) close out the original Venture card.

fam, want to get out of debt in 2021. need help. i have ~95K in debt ~50/50 credit cards and student loans. my credit score is ~600. i make ~175K a yr. but the biggest hits on credit are 1) utilization and 2) history (~4 years avg). i made some mistakes with credit cards a few years ago and am holding ~40K @ ~22% int. my thought is to get a personal loan for ~50K but due to my credit, that’s also at ~20+%. think i can pay most of it in 2021 but feel like i have no recourse but to do it 20+ int

Always been a fan of FIRE and reading about it has definitely helped my finances but I can’t help but wonder if the movement is more about lifestyle change than early retirement.

After you achieve FI,you basically have to maintain the lifestyle that got you there.

What if you want to go on a lavish vacation or buy that flatscreen TV? Are you supposed to do away with material goods entirely? I suppose you could keep working for discretionary $ and live off interest but then you’re not retired.

Hope to learn more if you bought an apt in Manhattan, or if you decided against it (renting/moving to upstate/Long Island/Jersey). Please share what you considered as you were making the decision - I hate throwing away rent but also don’t want to trap ourselves in significant financial obligations. Thanks!

I’ve got a really good job. Wasn’t looking to move but a big 4 consulting firm reached out. I received a very generous/life changing offer. I’m so worried about work/life balance if I take this offer. Also worried about layoffs in a year or two when the market gets back to normal. I’ve got an infant and a 5 year old. I know that I can manage my current workload. I don’t want to pass up a great opportunity but I’ve got to be available for my family too!

However, in the instance that a partner might have a financial challenge and you sense that because he doesn’t really tell you, is it ok to offer a helping hand without him asking or should you let him communicate his needs and you respond how u can. Thx

My best friend took a year off work and just traveled around South America with just a backpack and duffle bag of essentials. He spent about $5 to $10 a night at local hostels and food costs cheaper at local restaurants and shops. He spent roughly $500 a month on room and board. Aside from activities like bungee jumping or live sports events, most of the other activities costs little to nothing. Debating on saving up and just escape for a bit just like that.
