Maybe you guys can help, i want to get into tech but I can’t code, how can I effectively make that switch? I’m 40 and have been running my own business with my wife since COVID but it’s at a point where I can step away a little and do something different I’ve always wanted to do. Any advice?

Idk why so many people think coding is a requirement for tech. You only need to know how to code is you’re looking to get a software engineering job or similar where coding is fundamental to the role.

I would try to figure out what type of position you are interested in and align your resume to highlight your experience in that area. Throw in some tech buzzwords if they’re relevant, but otherwise don’t overthink it. Just be sure to quantify your performance (e.g. grew revenue 30% YoY).

I don't feel like coding is a requirement to be in tech but it also depends on what your goal in tech is. I've been in telecom for 20 years, I understand coding language structures but I don't do the nitty gritty.

A manager does not need to know how to do those things necessarily but they do need to understand the difference between quality work and subpar work. Proper QA reveals some of that, no code is perfect.

What is your goal? Is it management or development? Development imho means you need to be able to read code reasonable well.

like

I worked in telecom for about 12 years and watched the industry grow, I’ve always been fascinated with iot and given my experience was thinking tech sales, management, or consulting of some kind would be the easiest fit.

If you are interested in transitioning into the technology industry but do not have experience with coding, there are still many opportunities for you to explore. Here are a few potential strategies for effectively making the switch:

Learn the basics of coding. While you don't need to become a proficient programmer to work in the tech industry, having a basic understanding of coding can be helpful in many roles. Consider taking online courses or attending workshops to learn the fundamentals of a popular programming language like Python or JavaScript.

Explore non-technical roles in the tech industry. The tech industry offers a wide range of non-technical roles that do not require coding skills, such as product management, user experience (UX) design, project management, and business development. Research these roles and identify which ones align with your skills, interests, and experience.

Network and build relationships in the tech industry. Attend industry events, join online communities, and connect with people in the tech industry to learn more about the field and identify potential opportunities. Networking can help you learn more about the industry and connect with potential employers or mentors who can provide guidance and support.

Gain relevant experience through internships or part-time work. Many tech companies offer internships or part-time opportunities for people who are interested in transitioning into the field. These positions can provide valuable experience and insights, as well as a chance to develop your skills and make connections in the industry.

Overall, making the switch into the tech industry without prior coding experience is possible, but it may require some effort and dedication. By learning the basics of coding, exploring non-technical roles, networking, and gaining relevant experience, you can position yourself for success and make a successful transition into the tech

I am in a tech IC position. One of friends switched to FAANG by converting the profile to consultant profile. The friend who might have less tech knowledge than me is now in FAANG and earning more. I had been practising DSA for years and the competition is only ever growing.

Current contract - amazing company that has been vocal about bringing me on when approved but no promises. Contract is $60/hr. I negotiated high due to paying private health ins at high $. I was offered a role at a different company for $105K with a $5K sign on and additional benefits. I expressed my need for a $115K base in our original conversation. Anything less than 115K is a paycut from current $ and if I was offered FTE at current contract. Thoughts on negotiating? I dont want to be greedy
