MBA hire, 3 months in and starting 2nd project. Facing a steep learning curve. How long did it take you to "get it" and feel comfortable in your role?

One year. Because that's when you stop giving a shit and realize every project over promises and there's not much you can do about it so you just manage internal perceptions and try and make sure all the people that will gun for you during promotion like you and then you just ride the bullshit wave of whatever stupid project you are on.

The day you're comfortable in your job and stop learning is the day you move on to your next role, period.

Side note: the folks above you matter a lot

Sorry for the bitterness. Sunday flights will do that to you.

Key to helping you learn. For my first year I worked with some pretty awful teams. I've moved on to an awesome team and have learned more in 3 months than an entire year with the shitty team.

Seriously, I say at least a year. I am so n my 3rd and am not comfortable yet and I think for me it may take 2 years.

like

5 years and I am still not comfortable

like

34 years and counting. Never the same project or problem twice.

Maybe comfortable isn't the right word. But definitely playing catchup in my first few months. Everything takes longer

like

That depends on how much you push yourself. If you take more responsibilities early on, you'll learn quicker, but be sure not to over extend.

like

Without debating the meaning of the word comfortable, I'll assume you mean 'in your skin' or 'in your element'. That happened to me week 2. Most important thing to do is have confidence. If you don't have confidence that you know how to do something, then have confidence you can pick it up quickly. Good luck.

To a certain extend you will feel that uncomfortable feeling in the first several weeks in almost every project. Asking the right questions and focusing your time to solve the right problem is a skill you will gain sooner rather than later which will help. Especially if your projects are short term this is going to be a constant challenge or thrill - depends how you see it

like

Oh good, glad I've got time... @KPMG1 Do mean that that's something to know, or that they're key to helping you learn/acclimate

More than a year and am still not confortabke

LOL @EY1! Sucks you're traveling on Sunday

I understand the pay is solid ($130k+ salary depending on exp. and location) but I’m curious about career progression. Does anyone have experience as a Program Manager, Talent/HR/OD at a competitive tech firm, and with exit opps afterwards? Are we talking Sr Mgr, Director, or VP level positions in industry?

I have a return offer following my internship for an MBB in my home country in SE Asia. However, I want to stay in the US after my MBA (salary, relationship, network etc.). Would it make sense to get offers from T2s to put pressure on my company to enable a transfer? If so, how would I best play this card? I would likely pick any US firm over any MBB at home, given the financial considerations.
