Excel monkeys are worse
Seriously, grow up! You're at a consulting firm and feel superior to post MBA consultants and iBankers, how dare you? What exactly allows you to have that opinion and mindset? Maybe try to get into a good program before you talk in this condescending way. And another piece of advice: you decide what you are, not your degree.
Don't listen to these folks - they're too scared to admit that they don't create any value for their clients and are in fact overpaid PowerPoint monkeys.
Clients waste hundreds of dollars so these fools can worry about if it should blue or yellow, calibri or Arial.
Get a Masters in Financial math over an MBA, unless the MBA is from a top 10 school. Look into financial engineering programs. If you want a challenging job, look into working in a Capital markets group at a large bank. You can also go on an internal economist track at a Fortune 500. I came from industry and consultants fool themselves into believing they're the only ones making money
...I mean, if you go into I banking or consulting.
Thanks D3 and all others who provided constructive feedback. Sorry D2, forgot to take into account the feelings of those that may already be bitter from all the PPTs they had to put together.
So you buy into advice around going into something else unless it's a top 10 MBA...glad you got value out of this. If you think that consulting is about building decks then it might be the right move to leave this industry. It's not for everyone but I actually enjoy the work with my clients, building slides is not the focus of my job but providing opinion, guidance, and expertise where possible. Not sure what you mean when you talk about bitter feelings because you might not realize it but the way you ask implies how bitter yours are my dear friend. And yeah - the cookie cutter advice around getting a top 10 school MBA...that's some edgy shit right there 😂😂😂
Haha calm down D2, I actually mean it when I say I should have been more considerate with the language I used when I posted. It's just u are making it worse when u react very emotionally. All the respect to MBA holders ;)
Consulting was not what I expected when I left industry. The over emphasis on PowerPoint and aesthetics leaves me intellectually numb.
Also travel in industry in certain sectors like oil and gas exceeds consulting travel. You travel once a month but to a great location in South America or Europe or Middle East - not the BS weekly travel that consulting requires
Clients don't pay consulting firms millions of dollars for providing them with PowerPoint decks, it's for providing strategic advice and driving impact - choose an MBA or MS depending on what you want to do - follow your passion in whatever you choose
This PP monkey is counting his dollars and deleting emails from recruiters
Haha D4, glad to see u have a fulfilling life
Depends on what you want to do career wise. Either can be marketable.
If you're a more quantitative and getting into the weeds kind of person; or if you like the idea of structuring products, financial math. If not, MBA.
The CFAs and Economists I worked with at my last company had much more intellectually rigorous work on their plate. Salary wise all were in 6 figures with 30-40% bonus options. The Financial Economists got massive publicity with the C suite and would focus on research and publications. The CFAs were managing investments and most worked around 40-50 hours a week Max. Onsite gym, amazing cafeteria. Imagine a life where you actually do something interesting from 8-5, then you're free to do what you want. Some taught graduate level and undergrad level classes in the evenings, did realestate on the side. Not the stressed out and depressed Consultants I work with. On a personal life said, most were able to manage relationships with SOs and family.
D2, plenty of my former colleagues that were in the executive development program came directly from MBA programs. You're definitely drinking koolaid if all you think about from a top 10 MBA program is consulting or i banking.
D3 you crack me up! 😚 Merry Christmas to all you folks! Hug your fam and forget about work For a bit, no harm done! 😋
Versus being a what after a non-MBA masters?
PowerPoint is just the tool used to communicate. The post Mba level still uses it but is more involved in the problem solving and messaging
Awesome D3...as it turns out Bill Gates never got his bachelor degree, so anecdotal advice would make you think that dropping out of college is the way to becoming a billionaire.
