DD1. Learning how to solve complex-system problems. How to communicate. How to influence. Those are the core consulting skills. Lots of paths prepare you.
Also, medical skills and knowledge can be highly relevant in a business career. Healthcare is one of the largest sectors of the economy.
We hire a lot of MDs every year.
We definitely hire! And welcome the wealth of knowledge MDs bring with them
I'd rather be a dermatologist than a consultant...
If it is wet make it dry. If it is dry make it wet. Where is my$400K?
That said getting into dermatology makes getting into MBB look like a walk in the park...
^his problem was that he wasn't a dermatologist.
Same here director 1. Outside of surgeons, it seems like overall doctors work less and have less stress for money that still puts you above the 250k income bracket
I had a Ivy League trained neurologist on my team who decided to leave medicine and went into Consulting because he didnât want to deal with the administrative issues and bureaucracy
Mck1 seriously? Whatâs the logic behind that? How does med school prepare someone for a business related job?
I had 2 ppl at my orientation table who were doctors. One was fresh off Wharton and the other similar to OP's friend. The Wharton guy was in general strategy consulting and the other one came in as principal in health innovation and thought leadership. The second one works mostly now with hospitals on designing digital ERs and waiting rooms. Both are still here 5 years later and they say they like it!
Seems like a waste going into consulting after spending all that time in med school ... why bother? Doctors make bank, and consulting is much more cyclical than medicine
I have an MD on my current case team
I work with 2 MDs on my teams. They have certain skills that are valuable on my Pharma projects. That and they are cool and smart and hard working just like the rest of my team.
I guess it makes sense for them to go into health consulting but still seems like a long road and lots of debt for them
I worked with a woman that specialized in clinical trials. We flew her all over the world to consult with big pharma companies. It seemed like a pretty good gig to me.
DD1- not really, partners at MBB are easily making 600k+ in their first year. Not many doctors make that much unless they have their own practice or are surgeons. For a physician, average salary is probably around 300k
Acc2 so are you saying that they didnât take on extra debt and spend extra time by going to med school as opposed to going to a top undergrad or mba program which could have also gotten them into mbb as well? If you reread my post, I said they took the long road, not that itâs not worth it for them to go into consulting. Youâre also assuming that all of them will make it to partner which isnât the case. What percentage of consultants actually make it to partner? 10% or less
Weâve got heaps of MDs
Bcg3 are they normally working on healthcare clients or all over the place?
Also weâre looking at an average of 5 yrs for med school where as an mba is 2 yrs. Med students typically have 200k of debt upon graduation and mba students have roughly 80k. 120k more debt + 3 extra yrs for the same result and less business knowledge makes it hard to understand why someone would take this route unless they simply just changed their mind far into the med program.
