MBB: I have an opportunity to move from Bain to McKinsey, but I would lose my 1 year of tenure as a C and start fresh as a C1 equivalent at McKinsey. Incremental reputation worth the year lost?

I’d do it. McKinsey clearly has a better reputation than Bain and is known outside of consulting circles. If you consider yourself to be super-competitive and are planning to stay in the profession long term, McKinsey is the better place to be. Also consultants are obsessed with prestige and it will eat you up for years if you don’t make the jump (I hear Accenture might acquire you ;)) This might also be my immigrant POV saying this but if your have a chance to move from a #3 place to a #1 place, you take it.

Partner compensation is essentially commissioned based. And highly dependent on who you work with other partners wise. I am sure there are partners at Bain that make more than their MCK Dopplegangers and vise versus. There are so many factors to this that could change for you personally over the next 10 years. Also if you are actually amazing - build a book, wait until 1 rung below and then try to get poached with a partner contract

“On the ~5% chance I am a partner in ten years I want to make 1.75m instead of 1.5,” this is not a good DCF, please fix your model

BCG7 hahahaha, well said.

What are you solving for? Survival aka about to be let go at Bain or “reputation” or something else?

likesmart

Yeah, I have to side with P1 here and say that while I find phrases like “what are you trying to solve for” unnecessarily unclear and pretentious, as I said, I don’t think their later responses have been insufferable at all. P1 seems fairly genuine to me.

like

Yea why are you moving...?

like

Such a move is rare for a top performer. It’s the same at both firms and no difference in exit opps. Still trying to understand why you would do it if you aren’t being transitioned out

like

If you are too obsessed with being a Mckinsey partner, sure go for it. Otherwise there is literally not a single reason you laid out that makes it worthwhile to switch. It would be choosing hbs over gsb. I was in the job market recently as an EM and I was in final round at a couple of places and those offers went to folks from Bain and bcg, and vice versa where I got offers where Bain and bcg folks were in the run.

like

Unless you’re switching to a new location and Bain for whatever reason won’t let you move, I don’t see why you would do this? You would burn bridges at Bain for sure

like

This person screams “unrelatable and pretentious”. Probably harsh but how it is haha

like

This would be a dumb move. Currently recruiting and exMBB-ers treat people coming from firms basically the same. Might be a tiny preference for their own alumni, but def not worth losing an entire year of work exp.

like

Super weird. In my MBA program most Mck-Bain cross offerees went to Bain. Why would you want to start all over when the incremental gain may or may not exist?

like

Having a strong interest in high profile healthcare work maybe?

Gotcha. Feel free to dm me if you want my biased opinion 😅

Will your comp drop as well? If so, I’d say no

like

The way I’d think about it is that my comp stays the same, it just doesn’t get the increase of the C2 level I would’ve received had I stayed at Bain.

More money? Risk of being transitioned at Bain?

like

Money is about the same. Top performer at Bain.

I can’t comment on the reputation, but 1 year is really nothing if you’re in for the long haul.

like

OP I’m assuming you’re a year out of college? How did you manage to secure a lateral offer already?

like

Top performer C2 at BCG - I wouldn’t do it. Road to partner is loooong and think about everything you did to establish your reputation. You’d have to start again, extra goodwill as you transition to Manager role will come in handy too

like

Are you a FEMP? Or are you a “top performer” Based on 1 or 2 PDRs. This is a strange thread

like

Yeah he/she shouldnt even had the first review

No gain, potential for significant pain. Can’t believe this is even a question. You need to get out of this bubble where such a minor difference in prestige would mean something to you. In industry nobody cares if you came from MBB or Accenture.

After your first job, how relevant is GPA. For context, I went to a school that is very well known for grade deflation (Deloitte had a “suggested” minimum of 3.2 here) and I studied statistics, a particularly rough major at the school. Long story short, GPA was between a 2.9 and 3.0. This wasn’t due to slacking and I’ve done well at Deloitte so far with plenty of experience to speak to. Would my GPA still block me from certain firms, like any of the MBB firms or a Tier 2 consulting firm?
