Consulting 🐠 who left for industry, does WLB get better? How is the daily stress and hours? 2020 WFH was brutal and I’m thinking of getting out soon.

I came from Industry to consulting. Staying in consulting for a few more years for a title bump and experience but then I’m out. Better comp and work life balance in industry 100%. You can literally just leave at 5 or 6 and nobody calls you after hours asking for something to be delivered at 8am, you never work weekends and when you’re on PTO you are never contacted or asked for “just a small favor”. Consulting is great for learning but it’s not a life. Plus now that we’re WFH, it’s just expected that we’re available 24/7 especially given that it’s Covid and you can’t really go out. The pace is slower, but I’d rather be a little bored in my job occasionally than constantly anxious, stressed and unhealthy.

Yes, 40-50 hours weekly, individual contributor, TC around 300k. A lot of the pressure and stress will still be self imposed if you're a perfectionist, but you won't have managers and execs and clients constant pushing you. More ability to set proper expectations with stakeholders you work with.

To be clear, there's still occasionally crunch time. But those are usually well understood why (i.e. launch or escalation) you need to work extra hours or late night, and it's usually spent on value add work (not extra appendix slides).

WLB tends to be a personal calibration and does NOT change, at least across the many many ex-McK people I know. It’s the person, their drive, their standards, and not the environment. If opportunity is there, why not drive for it? And what if you love setting tough objectives and driving for results? It’s said McK is a ‘CEO factory’ but maybe it’s more accurate to say a ‘future CEO recruitment machine’. Many of them end up working super-hard at and then leading ‘great WLB companies’

I really hope there’s a niche for people who are more focused on WLB. I’m not trying to push to be CEO. I’d be content with a calm middle management job for life tbh. No need to make more than $250k/yr in my opinion.

Yes

I left in 2018 but started a company, that I’ve decided to make a side hustle. Have two offers for corporate but thought to go back into consulting as I have a hunch travel will be less going forward (main reason I left). Was WFH that bad in consulting?

Any motion graphics animators working at an ad agency around NYC? I'm currently in-house at $74k/yr and freelancing at around $800/day on the side which is great. Next week I'm interviewing with an ad agency and wondering what kind of salary is reasonable to ask for (mid-level, I suppose) to see if it's worthwhile. My current job will always be 100% fully-remote which gives me a lot of freedom. But if I can make enough at an agency to do less freelancing it could be nice,

Worked remote in another country last year and fell in love with it. Asked work for approval to live and work their remotely full time. I was told no and that no one is able to work out of the country because of taxes etc, which is fair. I later find out that I have coworkers who are lying about working in other countries and some who got approval to work in other countries. Yet I was told it was not allowed. Would you go to HR and be like wtf? Sounds like a rule that applies only sometimes.
