What are the current expectations for in-person vs remote work?

like

Consulting answer, but it depends on the team. Some are comfortable with remote, especially if they are short. I’d say the overall expectation is some level of comfort with collocation or client travel - where needed.

Lol y'all got played. All these questions, and OP's only response is to criticize Accenture🤦‍♂️

How do you get good projects for your first few (when you have no brand/discernible skills/consulting experience yet)? I’m defining “good” as “one that aligns extremely well with whatever the individual is solving for”.

What do you do if you don’t have a good PDM? What even makes a good PDM?

like

1. Make it crystal clear to the PDM what you’re solving for
2. Try not to solve for 3-5 dimensions at once. It being “good” on one dimension is great to start
3. If a practice/industry is part of your definition of good, connect with leaders and convince them to staff you — that way one “good” factor is guaranteed.
4. Honestly, luck plays a factor too. Depends what the staffing market is like!

Knowing what you know now, what would you prioritize as a new (experienced) hire? Hard skills? Networking? Soft skills? Getting good at setting boundaries for a sustainable life? Taking on impactful/visible scope to prove yourself? Working in areas you find interesting/want to learn about?

like

1. Boundary setting
2. Knowing HOW to ramp quickly on subject matter I don’t know
3. Creating a structure/routine in my life re: gym, food, family etc to start good habits (link to 1)
4. Definitely work in areas you are interested in. Everyone will say solve for people, which absolutely do, but AFTER that, focus on areas you actually care about.

Are you guys still hiring at the Associate level? Top 5 critical skills one needs to survive at McK

Yes.
- top down communication
- prioritization of tasks /managing multiple tasks at the same time
- being comfortable not knowing the answer at firm
- decent analytical ability
- some humility

Given most leave before making it to Partner, what are some key similarities amongst those who stay? Cutthroat? Extremely driven by $? Salesman types? Truly interested in the work? Phenomenally fast learners? Have no family/friends outside of work? Are divorced?

Not at that level, hard to comment on it — sorry.

That said, haven’t seen any of these qualities unify the ones that I do know.

How are people viewed who solve for WLB or minimal-travel studies (assuming same quality work as peers)? Are they looked down upon or viewed the same if they do great work? Do they progress more slowly? Have fewer learning opportunities?

Ultimately though, less time working/doing something productive on the beach, means less reps which = fewer learning opss

Recommendations for how to get the best in-person coaching as a new hire given how remote things are now?

Set up 1-1 feedback with leaders during m-thu instead of Friday when you travel back home. Sit in the team rooms, ask questions to those around you, and actually absorbe the feedback OTHER team members are receiving.

In the current labor market , is McK open to lateral hires? I’m hoping to join at the post-MBA associate level (I have 3 years of consulting experience, no MBA).

Yep!

How many hours do you work and what’s your base + bonus? And are you in Canada? Curious if McK pay is on par with my Accenture comp based on an hourly pay

In US, base is 100 (guessing it’ll go up to 110 based on new hires) + bonus upto 30. Hours varies from 60-70/week. Some longer, others much more manageable.

What’s the staffing process like?

Varies slightly by tenure, but early/mid-stage, you work with your PDM to discuss your goals / what you’re solving for, you discuss several potentiall options, just put on the studies list of potential, reach out to study. Chat with EM and ED, get a mutual sense of each other. If confirmed, let PD know and it’ll be done

Got caught up all day! Will answer these tomorrow!

Have you ever rolled off a case? Known someone who has? What was the reason and did they professionally recover from it? How quickly?

I have! Pretty quick bounce-back. Just needed to find a team that was willing to hear about the situation, understand the context, and take a chance on me / trust all the other feedback they’d heard. Ended up being my study at the firm, followed by another excellent one.
Obviously very context dependent. But rolling off happens - don’t let it define you.

I bounced from consulting last year, but very much hate my current role. The company is well known and large, but not very transparent or concerned about treating employees well. I have a vacation planned for end of August, but I got an offer this week. PTO is not paid out and I can't quit and use vacation to extend my 2 week notice.

Thoughts on how to handle? Give 1 week notice. Give notice 1 week before vacation and offer to work 1 week after vacation. Don't want to lose my 7 PTO days.

However the GM at the time, quit 1 and a half months in. I was thrown into the role and have been handling it since.
My regional calls himself our GM but is never on site.
Was reluctant to cover my shifts when I became sick and requested time off for a few days. (4 days)
Any thoughts?

Burnout is because you did something consistently for an extended period. You can do quick fixes like go on vacation, get some sleep, exercise more. But they may only help temporarily, depending on your level of Burnout.

Try adjusting your approach to work / life to a more sustainable, and ideally, enjoyable balance.

A few months ago I asked the question about using travel smart routers to host a VPN to disguise your location. The purpose of this is to have a working vacation in a foreign country, without telling work about it. My work computer has restricted access so I cannot install a VPN service on the computer without help from IT. My work around is a smart router that can directly host a VPN. Now I am in Cabo with a VPN to the US. I’ve included some details in a comment below. AMA
