I’d try and talk to a few more people. Also depends on what city we are talking - office cultures do vary quite a bit. Culture is local and specific not firm wide and consistent in my experience.

On balance if you want to stay to partner - McK’s track is slightly faster but we are growing a higher rate so there’s probably a marginally higher chance of making it (that said you are 5-6 years out so who know what the world will be like then).

Family wise - think it’s probably a wash assuming you’re happy to do whatever industry is in the area your office is in. Bigger offices generally have more local options to limit travel at BCG, and if it’s a big office then being local is very feasible.

Good luck with the decision!

I would go to BCG! The vibe I received from the Mck folks were they were all under a lot of pressure and always running around, and they all looked very stressed.
The partners didn’t have much say, and mostly it is the Sr Partners calling that shots. And apparently the Sr Parters did not care about process and they do what they want. And the rest of the firm needs to bend over.
And you also have to act like a robot, “the Mck way” and lose all individuality. There is a Mck way for leadership, one for doing decks, prob solving. It’s like they have the next gospel. Even though the firm has made countless mistakes.
BCG you can be yourself and that’s priceless!

Regardless of whichever firm you join, you are coming in at the worst level possible. Good luck!

Honestly I’d go BCG. They’ve always sat well with me having worked with both firms as a client. No wrong answer, McKinsey is a powerhouse and has a huge alumni network. Comp will be near equal or the delta will be nearly irrelevant. Go with who you think jives better with your goals.

likehelpful

I had the same choice as you and went where I thought I’d integrate better from a people standpoint. One thing I didn’t weigh as heavily (because I was excited about the generalist track) is where I would have more pull based on my previous experience/expertise.

If you join BCG, hit me up!

Another plus in the BCG column if you're planning on starting a family is our insurance and the "$5 babies" it offers

likehelpful

That's pretty much equivalent to McKinsey. Max out of pocket is $100. Anything outside that is fully covered

likehelpful

McKinsey just extended parental leave significantly - for both parents. Also, our staffing is pretty regional too.

No wrong answer here - BCG is a great firm too.

I’m a senior EM and happy to tell you about my experience. feel free to DM

To be clear again, at McKinsey, you get 21 weeks by default as a birthing parent + there’s another 6 months available in case of complicated births.

Could be the same at BCG but I want to be sure that the distinction is clear that 21 weeks doesn’t ‘consume’ short term disability at McK

McK pays more at partner level if you want to stick around

likefunnyhelpful

Yup M8 - not debating that. Just provided a data point for consideration

When in doubt, go with McKinsey. Will learn a more structured and rigorous consulting toolkit. But it may not be your thing.

likehelpful

Maybe another aspect to look into - how the integration into Mck/BCG works, eg support you’ll get, resources you’d use, etc. EM/PL can be really tough.

likehelpful

Another perspective:
- in McKinsey, you never hear anyone asked “how/what is BCG doing this xx or yy”
- in BCG, you often hear people ask “what does McKinsey do on xx and yy”

likehelpful

Finally someone agrees to my comments. I know what’s happening in both firms, and thanks for assuring.

For colleagues in McKinsey: you guys don’t know how often BCG ask that kind of questions about McKinsey. Let me tell you, it’s super often. Sure in McKinsey we do ask too but it’s really not as frequent (in other words, we always subconsciously think we are the best and we don’t really ask what BCG is doing).

For friends in BCG: thanks for assuring that. But I also want to assure you that BCG is not seen as “nobody” to us. You guys are equally strong. 😃

Integration will be hardest. Get a feel for the culture / how people work and see where you’ll fit better. PL and EM are tough jobs esp when you’re a lateral hire (source: my best friend works at McK)

I was in a similar situation last year and decided to go ahead with McK. They even paid more than BCG also gave additional joining bonus.
Partner path at McK from EM is more faster and flexible compare to BCG.
Health benefits are unmatchable and something to keep in mind.

Both are great firms but M has more edge from B.

likehelpful

Was in same situation many years ago. I think I would have turned out the same in both firms. You would too

Have ample respect for Mck, but all the scandals (real or perceived) in last few years now make me question the value/culture and in hindsight i feel like I made the right call.

likehelpful

Either way, you’ll be fine.
Coming in at that level is hard, but you can make it work!
Good luck!

100% untrue. One of the values celebrated at the firm is an individual’s ‘obligation to dissent’. The firm celebrates individual opinion in that regard. Now are there a few people who maybe overbearing, sure. But that’s likely true for all places.

helpful

Maybe when BCG3 you can get the facts right we can have a real conversation.

Thanks all for contributing to the post! I am still leaning heavily towards BCG after speaking with few personal connections but Mckinsey interviewers have been so much more proactive in follow-up / much more engaged.

Is this just a difference in how recruiting training works between the firms or do I need to be worried that BCG wont be as engaged in people development once I join?

like

I would disagree with BCG3’s assertion about people development and mentorship. I spent 7+ years with the firm and found the development model is pretty capricious. So to be fair and split the difference of opinion, Let’s just say YMMV.
