McKinsey people a few weeks ago: “Sorry, I can’t refer you because it would dilute my network quality and I won’t even take the time to get to know you.”

McKinsey people now: “Take my referral and apply now!”

What a difference $5k makes.

What a lovely way to try and stereotype a population of over 30K people globally, across various backgrounds, contexts and values...

Not sure what your beef is with the firm. I doubt you mean to, but this makes you come across as some small lil fella who couldn't make it past screening.

And to your point, I'd say 'no'. Some, and hopefully most, still care more about reputation and network quality (as you put it) rather than a measly 5k (its peanuts in the grand scheme of things).

Thank you everyone for making my day better. I wish I could see this type of post everyday

I’ve been referring candidates, helping case coach and doing coffee chats for 2 years and so have most of my friends 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️ sure 5k is nice but it’s not why I help people out.

I think many of us are willing to broaden the aperture of our referrals due to extreme need & a bit due to financial incentive.

Not really sure what point you’re trying to make.

Haha I was thinking the same thing.

It’s McKinsey. We already know what they do for money.

Sure there is financial incentive. But more importantly we really need more people so all of us here can have better lives. Many teams are short staffed at the moment and we are all suffering

I don’t know. We’re playing musical chairs with the other firms — and some people are going to industry.

Long story short, if you have a pulse, you’ll get hired

People should absolutely get an incentive to refer, the company is benefiting too. Be humble when people open up doors for you.

like

There are a ton of people on here basically spamming for referrals in the same way that people throw their Hello Fresh and Blue Apron codes onto RetailMeNot.

When somebody says "ask me for a referral" are you going to actually advocate internally for their hire? And vouch for a stranger? I'm guessing "referral" just gets someone into the pipeline with your name tagged for cash in case they get hired but you won't work for it and also you won't look bad if they don't get in.

I'd say why should I let you have a referral bonus on my coattails? What are you going to do for me?

like

The smarter approach isn’t to ask for a referral but for an informational interview. Then you can ask for a referral which can be more informed if you impress.

Consulting just doesn’t have the allure it once did

like

McK wasn’t offering a referral bonus before? I’ve made over $30k in my 3 years at BCG so it’s not insignificant

like

Nice! I’ve only been referring people to the consultant level ($5k bonus), but that is sweet!

like

The $5k incentive has always been there. This whole conversation is based on a false premise 🤦🤦🤦

Anyone want to give me a referral?

funny

Wants?

I’d gladly take a referral regardless of what they get or don’t get. Happier if they get something out of helping me. Why be bitter? What do you gain from being bitter?

All the mckinsye referral threads are gone :(

Please ask me any questions you may have about technical accounting or our group. P.S. we have similar base comp as big four but our bonuses can be the same/exceed base
