MD of my practice took me out to lunch and we started talking about climate change and he said he wasn't sold on climate change yet because the "jury was still out". 😡Should I roll off or resign?

To everyone talking about how climate change is a fact, you are wrong. It is a hypothesis. It is even a hypothesis backed by enough data to become a theory which is about as close as science ever comes to facts but it is not a fact. In science facts only exist in the past tense and single occurrence. If there is any chance that something may not be true anywhere or any part of the time they are then not facts. Science for the most part holds the word fact to such a holy standard that not even gravity is a fact, it is a theory to explain why the fact that we observe things falling occurs it is not a fact which is why there is more than one theory of gravity. With climate change there are facts within the argument moved into theories but talking about it like the argument is fact just shows you've never read a scientific article on the issue which are filled with assumptions and qualifications. I personally believe that the theory of human caused climate change is most likely correct, but is a far cry from a fact and the possible implications of this theory are widely unknown with no consensus between predictive models we've just chosen to focus on more dire models which in the lends of risk mitigation is probably the best course of action, but trying to say their occurrence is inevitable just makes you sound like an uneducated idiot who thinks that predictive modeling is voodoo esp

@McKinsey and Salom 1 actually I do. It is actually what allows for scientific advancement. The underlying assumption that any and all your assumptions might be wrong. Something observed is only true for the time you observed it. There is of course the common sense approach that if you observe something enough times it will most likely continue to be true but the assumption that under some conditions it might not be is what pushes forward a large amount of advancement especially in the theoretical science fields. Those of us that read actual scientific journal articles and not 7 times removed news reports on them have a slightly different view of the word fact. Aka it is a fact that the most likely explanation for the observed warming of the earth is man made. It is also a fact that based on current knowledge and means of measurement it is most likely that he earth will continue to warm. There is a high probability that the results of this warming will be harmful BUT the statement that the earths warming is caused by man and will be harmful is not a fact. It is a theory. It could be wrong. Is it likely to be wrong? No. Could we discover something is 10 or 100 or 1000 years that proves it was, absolutely. A fact is absolute and having a high probability is not the same as being absolute.

Are you serious, OP? Unless you consult on climate change, can't you deal with the diversity of opinion?

like

How does this affect your ability to do your job exactly?

like

EY1, diversity of opinion? Are you fucking kidding me? It's one thing for a farmer from Nebraska to have that point of view, but you, an educated consultant, think that disagreeing with 98% of the world's scientists spread across 4 broad disciplines counts as "diversity of opinion"?

like

There's actually somewhat credibility arguments against climate change that scientists agree with .. It's not 100% proven. Did you even do research on this? Or is it purely political? The ozone has actually massively recovered of late. I'm not denying climate change but it's definitely not as cut and dry as everyone thinks. Read a book

There are facts about climate change and there are facts about humankind's interaction with the environment. The overlap of these two is more nuanced than often acknowledged.

EY1 go to bed. It's not an opinion. These are facts.

OP you should roll over and play dead, what a stupid fucking post. Ideology is killing free thought, what about people having differing opinions and you just move on with your life? Everyone does not to agree on everything but maybe you should quit and go do something more fulfilling than consulting.

Wow- what has become of us and our ability to be individuals? Just because someone is in the majority or has the biggest mouth, doesn't give them the right to bully everyone else or be condescending because someone else doesn't share your view. Get a grip!

People, there is a difference between opinions and beliefs. Opinions are positions people hold on a subject where there is no actual right or wrong. I think chocolate is better than vanilla; the next guy thinks the opposite. Neither is "correct" or "incorrect" and neither can be challenged.
Beliefs are positions people hold on a subject where there is an actual right or wrong. Climate change is either real or it isn't. Your thoughts on it aren't an opinion. Your beliefs about climate change can be challenged.
With data.
And facts.

@pwc2 couldn't give less of a hoot where you're from or what you believe. My main point is that there's conflicting beliefs on the science behind it (mainly the human cause argument) so wanting to roll off a team bc the leadership has an opinion on it is absolutely pathetic and I highly doubt they're more than 5 years removed from the post HS four year vacation called college
