US healthcare a single payer system after 4 years of med school? 😂 come on man... I mean Joe won and all that but hell will freeze over before that happens. A public option for ACÁ is more likely. Either way, it depends on the specialty too. For most specialties residency is 3 years. 5 for surgery for example and then a fellowship before becoming a full attending. And in nice cities, a family doctor makes around 180 to 250 depending on the city. Surgery obviously more and depends on the surgery specialization as well.

H2 - Med School at UAB and residency was Emergency Medicine with the Army. Fun times but had to step out. It can take a toll yet it can be addictive. If it is was not in the field, then I didn’t want to do it and then I realize it was time for me to move on. B/c it becomes an abusive relationship, you don’t want to leave bc you love it but it breaks your heart in so many ways is not even funny. So, MBA it was 🤣!

In the unlikely scenario that the US switches to single payer, you would likely also have had your student loans forgiven. Try to make this decision more multidimensional than simply basing it on IRR. That’s an important metric, but shouldn’t be the only consideration. Whatever you choose, you’re going to need to find meaning in. Unlike an MBA, an MD won’t require you to gaslight yourself into thinking you and your work matter.

The fact that you are asking this question means you should go with the MBA.

Yeah you don’t go into medicine for the money...

Dude dont be a doctor for the money. Be one so you can help people and care about making a positive impact. This post is cringeworthy.

A1 - Honestly? 2nd tour was rough. I was working with sf operations and basically you triage and patch up as much as possible so our soldiers get help within the golden hour and medevac the hell out of there. It took a toll on me bc I was working like hell and I was still losing them. That takes a toll as I mentioned before. Coming back my 10 years were up so decided to say goodbye and go for an MBA. There is not a day that passes by that I don’t question my decision. But I knew another tour back and shit would have gone awry on my head. Still miss the hell out of it though. And well consulting offered something similar to a much smaller scale. Dynamic projects, always something new, “landing” on the client to help. Don’t know, in my head made sense. So far it has been good and can’t complain.

If you don't have the passion to help people (not the impression I'm getting here) don't get an MD. Also even after med school, residency, fellowship (~9-10y) I highly doubt we'll be in single payer system.

This question shouldn't be about the money. Both will provide for your needs. If you don't want to be a doctor for the sake of being a doctor, get an MBA.

Do you want to be a doctor or not? It’s that simple.

You will not make it through Med school if you’re asking this question.

MBA would put me back 100k. Good program, but not H/S/W as it's in Europe. 1 yr so less opportunity cost. More flexibility (could leave healthcare if I wanted into something like tech or finance). MD is top 20 in US. Top 10 in the specialty of interest.

Med school and residency can be grueling, but you’re more likely to make it to the top end of the comp range. What field do you plan on pursuing post mba?

Not sure how much of a factor it is in Europe, but if you're interested in the biotechnology side of things you could consider doing both as an MD/MBA (although if they're different institutions you're SOL)

Porque no los dos?

2010 called they want their memes back 😀

How old are you? My cousin is in surgery residency. Will come out making a little less than me with a higher ceiling but with 8-10 years less earnings.

My CEO is both ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

BCG3 is exactly right. Do you want to have the ability to directly heal people for all of the profound implications (moral, religious, etc.) of that.

Whatever you will regret less when you are 80. You have to study that hard, do the work and deal with the consequences of that decision for the rest of your life. Not us. No amount of money will make up for regrets on your deathbed. Choose wisely. Both are good options.

Following: OP you could get the MD and exit back into industry. Easier said than done bc of the amount of animosity you’ll deal with amongst your peers + faculty, but many have gone down that path
