There's a lot to be said about blending in. Honestly, I take it day-by-day and travel with both jeans and slacks. It depends on which clients you'll be seeing. I was on a strategy assessment for a marketing team at a tech company. You bet the marketers cared about appearance, but when days where I was around the dev team, I dressed down. It's important to fit what they expect--marketing expected a strategy consultant, devs expected one of the guys (it helped that I'm Asian).

As some one pointed out earlier formal shirt and jeans

In consulting the best path is to dress like a nice version of how the clients dress. If you want to look good in a dressed down environment, the principles are the same. Concentrate on fit and quality. A button down and jeans can look very sharp when it is well fitting jeans with a tailored shirt and a pair of not super formal dress shoes.

I dress the same way I do for any other team, event, or client. Sharp and sexy. my client or surroundings don't dictate how I dress, how I enjoy dressing happens to work in any environment.

I'd still wear a button down and dress pants, it's more comfortable to me than jeans tbh

that's the idea ACN2, straight from the client site to the bar! 🕺

D1, that's not great advice for a consultant, though I too enjoy dressing sharp. Doesn't work for all clients, in some cases makes your job harder.

touche TA1 😂 D2 I'm just fortunate that my preferred style of dress is between business casual and business formal, so I'm always dressed appropriately or right above, which is great for consulting. I don't shop for work or play, my wardrobe works for both

damn TA1 😂 you make me sound like an alien

can either look really professional, or dorky depending on the rest of your outfit, the phone, and if you can pull it off D3. Did this for a while but in the end just opted for using a compartment in my laptop bag. Also I got a new belt at the time and didn't want to "mark" it up

You must be a chameleon

actually the opposite is true, I stand out but not in a bad way. I just really like dressing well, even away from work, and that pays off in this line of work because I don't have to shop for both

I go old-school geek with a slim black tie and white shirt look, jeans or dress pants situation dependent.

Business Casual - Long sleeves shirt over slacks. On Fridays, dressing down more - Short sleeves shirt over Khakis. I still look sharp but not too casual.

while most of that is true D4, standing out in a good way is very different from standing out in a bad way, which is what one wants to avoid. Blending in isn't always a positive, though the idea of assimilating to your client culture is usually a good idea. I was also taught as a consultant you are expected to be the example in many ways thus dressing nicer than your clients is not out of the norm. the key is to balance client culture while still representing your firm. To me, that's dressing more up than down. Also, as I mentioned above, because my personal style is to dress up regardless, there's a limit to how much I would dress down. I'm at clients who's dress code is jeans and t-shirts all the time and I still dress well. I'm not out of place, nor misrepresenting my firm, and I look good and feel good at the same time. Dress professionally (it's a spectrum), carry yourself professionally, and be cordial and classy, and you'll do fine.

I studied SCM in college but I’ve been working through tech implementations on the ptp side for about 4 years now - it’s been all indirect client work though and no supply chain. At a smaller firm now and feel like I’d have to jump to an Accenture to actually have the ability to do that kind of work (logistics and trade optimization, planning, manufacturing)

I just need to rant for a second. There’s an analyst that has been lying about his past experiences and resume to get on cool, high profile projects. As someone who has all of these skills and plays by the book it’s incredibly frustrating to see this happen. There’s a project coming up that I helped with the proposal and he’s now trying to get on it. I’m worried they’ll choose him over me because of his embellished experience

Receiving any negative/constructive feedback scares the sh*t out of me. I had a toxic previous job experience with a manager who used any small thing as a means to scare me out of employment. Now at my new place of employment, if I do get a constructive comment or something to work on, a lot of anxious thoughts run through my mind until I can somehow calm down and go back to working somewhat productively again - but I always have that fear of being fired over it. 😔
